Softner I too try to avoid P&G, by using Persil and Comfort. I have used Aldi's softener (forgot its name) and also Sainsbury's own branded products which are great for the price.

sainsburys I have been using the Sainsbury's equivalent recently - £1.80 for 1.5litres. I think its smashing! For larger loads I use a little more than the recommended amount and still does a great job.
