    EVERYBODY should read this!

Soaking vs. extended tumbling 12 hours soaking = x hours tumbling, where x is ???? x is probably much less than 12, if for no other reason than because tumbling continually brings fresh detergent and bleach into contact with the fabric, in contrast to quiescent soaking. Also, tumbling takes...

Scary A dishwasher is a lot more complicated than a toilet bowl.

LimeAway Google search for Limeaway found some references to it discoloring stainless steel.

    Descaling dishwasher

I don't want/need a softener Whoa, my situation isn't as dire as all that... The hardness in my water is dissolved calcite from an acid neutralizer, and it isn't all that hard. My 10-year-old dishwasher has no visible scale on its plastic tub, or spray arms or spray arm holes. I got on this...

    Descaling dishwasher

About descaling a 1999 Kenmore Ultra Wash dishwasher -- How much citric acid would you use? Could any harm come from descaling dishes at the same time? I suspect our drinking glasses, in particular, could benefit from it. They're made of Tupperware, hard plastic of some sort, or glass. BTW, I...

    News from Whirlpool

Some perspective on 240V in US The fact is, anyone in the US living in a single-family house or townhouse, with reasonably up-to-date electrical service, can get an electrician to install a 240V outlet for a washing machine. The cost would range from a couple hundred to a few hundred, depending...

    Electrolux washers

Thomas, re the heater, I meant for cycles other than sanitary, and was referring to these posts: Post# 360591-6/30/2009-08:57 ||| thomasortega (Brazil) Post# 360611-6/30/2009-10:45 ||| georgect (Connecticut) As for bleeding the hot water pipes, there's a nearby powder room that would bleed...

    Electrolux washers

georgect I have an "Americanized Miele", my only Miele purchase, that's great but not perfect, and I've never owned anything Electrolux. So I have no reason to be a rabid Miele partisan, or anti-Electrolux. I'm pretty sure that the Electrolux would not wash for me as well as my Miele, because...

    Electrolux washers

ronhic Thanks, but I wasn't asking for myself (have a Miele with comforters cycle). Rather, I was commenting on Thomas' statement that a bulky cycle isn't important. Also, when the Electroluxes were announced in the US, I looked at the manuals online, and was surprised at the lack of a bulky...

    Electrolux washers

ronhic, I'm thinking of the case where the load is a comforter (doona in Australia, right?) big enough so it turns along with the drum and doesn't tumble. Then the same surface keeps coming into contact with the water at the bottom. It would get good and wet, but that wetness would only migrate...

    Electrolux washers

Bulky cycle I would've thought that bulky items, too big to tumble around much, would tend to get wet only around the outside, if there's no bulky cycle to tell the machine to somehow treat them differently.

    FriGEMore laundry center: experiences?

Load/unload FL dryer vs FL washer Loading: The dryer drum is big enough so you can drop or toss items into it. In contrast, you have to "stuff" items into an FL washer, if you're using more than a fraction of the capacity. Unloading: Bigger drum and door on dryer makes it easier to reach in...

    My New Laundry Plant

Central chemical dispenser I saw a setup like that in the laundry facilities of the new county jail, on a tour before it opened. This way the inmates can operate the machines, but don't have access to the chemicals, which are in a separate locked room.

LaundryNut, you mentioned an out-of-balance problem in another thread. Is that on the SQ, or another machine?

    My New Laundry Plant

Phosphates Thanks, sudsman (and LaundryNut!). Another question...for what kinds of loads do you use phosphates, and when do you avoid them? What do you think of the practice of adding a couple of tablespoons of STPP as a booster in domestic laundry?

    My New Laundry Plant

Any main wash time more than 10 or 12 mins is a waste of tim Surprised to read this, because extended wash cycle (approx. 1 hour just for wash) on my Miele gives great results. Could it be another difference between regular home-style detergents (Sears Ultra Plus powder in my case) and...

    omg who is next!!!

Getting back to washing machines... If agitator top-loaders become unavailable in the US, what'll be the alternative for people who have to replace one of those 24" "laundry centers", with a little agitator tub on the bottom and a dryer on top? One answer would be a compact dryer stacked on top...

    omg who is next!!!

To the Rugged Individualists on City Water & Sewer :-) With increasing population, water/sewer utilities are faced with rising demand. If it gets to the point where they must expand their facilities, this can be very expensive and complicated. It's much easier to reduce demand, by encouraging...

    The BIG Question

2140 WasherFan, I've got to point out that you're seemingly judging front-loaders from your experience with one of the least expensive, most basic models sold in the U.S. I can't imagine going back to a top-loader after owning a Miele W4840 for a few months.

New Speed Queen washers and dryers!

Unnecessary balancing Miele is the same way -- it goes through the preliminaries, like pulse spins, even if the particular load doesn't need them. It will extend them if necessary, but doesn't shorten them.
