I've done it................ With my "56 Hotpoint fridge/freezer combo. You should definitely ground your appliance. All you have to do is run your ground wire to chassis.

Yes it sounds like................ A bad thermostat. I have replacements if you need one. This model is from 1958 and I would suggest re wiring it too if you feel that enterprising and want to keep it for a long time.

Your thermostat............. If it's reading proper temperature, then it's OK.

This is what I use............. The flat disposable foil baking pans with barely any edge on it that you can place directly under the bottom burner. They can't curl and they never touch the burner whatsoever.
