    scary vintage bradford automatic washer...

    W. T. Grant When I went to beauty school, there was a very large (2-story) Grant's nearby. I do remember going over from time to time for things like jeans and undershirts. Always a stop by the appliance section just to look. I remember their top-freezer fridges looked quite substantial (a...

1970s San Antonio house well preseerved

Acoustic Tiles My sister and BIL live in an upscale 'hood where all the houses are of the same vintage as this one. Most of them have this in the family room and rec room. When they moved in, lots of avocado/orange/seafoam green. It's all history now. Beautiful home, BTW. Sending those...

    New Maytag Ad Campaign

What Bob Appnut said I met Clay Jackson at an appliance roadshow a couple years ago at THD. Nice fellow and hilarious to boot! All the gals just loved him (some of us guys, too). Remember the commercial where he takes an entire chocolate cake and a frozen pizza or two and stacks the pizzas...

    About electricity bills

@thomasortega Thank you for your candid observations. A dear friend of mine from NYC is in a LTR with a Brazilian fellow. They live on the Ipanema beach neighborhood. I am constantly frightened by news reports of street gunfire, police helicopters being shot down out of the sky by...

    The Things You Learn Here....

Idjits are everywhere In my years at THD, I thought I heard it all. One day, a distinguished older lady came in to buy a stove. My first question: Gas or electric? Gas. Second question: Self-cleaning or standard? Ummm, I'd rather a standard-clean. I had a self-cleaning range for 14...

Preference of Gas or Electric ranges?

GAS! Here in SoFL electric ranges are de regeur. If they ran gas mains down my street I would be at THD tomorrow to order a gas range. When it's "on" it's on; when it's "off" it's off. And my gas range in NJ never asphyxiated my cat, my parakeet, me or my guests. Have a nice day.

Happy New Year - Time For Another Appliance Failure

@ Allen Ever try to shake cellophane off your fingers? Like from Twinkie wrappers, other baked goods, window envelopes, coldcut party trays. Too easy to stick to a damp glass or plate unseen. Toothpix, I know at least two fellows who have fixed bridges like mine who carry a couple in their...

    Oven Cleaning

Handy Tip On newer General Electric/Hotpoint/Profile products, the oven door is easily removable. Just open a little bit, grasp both sides and pull straight up. This way you can take it outside to clean with hose or put on a counter or bench. Easier than bending over or kneeling on the...

    Sears Spins Off Land's End

@ petek You post the most gorgeous pix! The Pontiac is a '64, my OM had one in the same color. To me, that looks like a Renault parked at the curb. We did see Hillmans in New Jersey in the early 1960s, but the ones I remember looked similar to later-model Volvos. Funny, we moved into our...

new line of kenmor topload washer (2014)

"Cold/Tap Cold" Before I left THD and my appliance career, my three factory reps told me the same thing (MYT, GE, LG). "Cold" is tempered with the addition of warm water thru the valve to about 65F degrees to allow for correct dissolving of powdered detergent and additives. According to them...

    Sears Spins Off Land's End

Fit & Quality I ordered from Land's End catalogue for years because they had the size I needed, plus the option of hemmed or cuffed pants. Plus a long "rise" option which I need. Shirts could have nice touches like monogramming on pockets or cuffs. As soon as Sears took over, all those...

Why are we more scared of raw egg than reheated rice?

Disgust Alert You've been warned! A co-worker always hated the consistency and taste of mayo. She went thru the drive-up of a well-known chain (rhymes with K of C), specifically requesting no mayo on her fried boneless chicken sangwidge. On her way back to work she unwrapped the sangwidge...

Quick Trip and a ride in a dream car!

Road Runner! My ex had one very similar to the one in the video when we were in h.s., hers was maroon.  Same balky starting routine, also mega-easy to flood!  But once it was going, look out!   A short portion of I-80 had just opened nearby when we graduated (6/69), so one hot July night she...

Need new dryer advice (common laundry room dryer)

At THD Over the years I sold a number of commercial GE models (gas & electric) to landlords and frathouses (! if you can believe that!) No one ever came back to me with a complaint.  Maytag did make them but for some reason they did not make them available to THD.  The GE's ran about $550 in...

    Floridian appliances

I had to smirk! The self-stick tile in the kitchen was the same one I put in my apartment in the 1980s! If you'll catch old episodes of "Roseanne", you'll see she has the same pattern! The Admiral washer is a late-model exclusive from The Home Depot. While not as flexible and efficient as...

Ranges...What was used most in your area..

Gas, via Public Service GAS and Electric! I never saw an electric range (except on TV) until we moved from the 'hood to the 'burbs. In the tenement my mother had an ancient Prizer (on legs!) that was gas, as was our boiler (no one called them hot water heaters). Around the corner my aunt had...

    Modern Mobile Home Living

@ Whirlcool My parents lived in a 55+ enclave of "manufactured housing", which others in town just referred to as "the trailers". I learned what becomes of "old" mobile homes driving back and forth through NC and SC on my way to my new home in FL. They are mostly left to rot and fall apart on...
