Vintage Finds Online: Part Thirty One

#49 I looked at that refrigerator a few months back. It was at used furniture store. They said it was working when taken out of the house so should be working now. Drove 3 hours one way and thank heavens I was able to plug it in because I think something more than "freon" is wrong. It looks...

Washer with 2 in 1 Removable Agitator

Industry first ? I don't know how they can say this is an "industry first" idea. Westinghouse and Hotpoint had removable agitators and Sears had one that you could dial in the lower fins, all to "customize the washer to any load the customer whats".

    First Generation Westinghouse Laundry Twins

The first Westinghouse slantfronts were early 1940's (had to pay Bendix 3 cent royalty per machine). Production stopped for WW11 (1942) and the machine was redesigned. Westinghouse didn't want to keep repair parts for the first design so they offered to traded a new design washer for your old...

    Need these to go away

I don't think the green one is "pre Maytag" or from the same factory. Maytag had thier name on washing machines earlier than it.

    Removing a late 50's KitchenAid KD-12 Dishwasher

I think these are wider than modern dishwashers so measure first if you are going to install in an existing opening.

    GE Combo

a wringer may sound cute, but are labor intensive and won't remove as much water as a spin cycle. They make small laundry spin dryers, I would look in to those. Small very efficient and quick. Spin at over 3000 rpms. Some clothes come out ready to iron (if you still iron!) in less than 3 to 5...

    Movies with Appliances Being Used

There is a movie with Bob Hope (and I think Lana Turner) where he is writing about the suburbs and moves to a house there. He loads a combo and ends up with a flooded mess that the housewife next door has to help clean up and instruct him how to use the machine. The movie takes place in a brand...

    POD

I can guarantee that she is not starting that dishwasher with guests right there if she wants to hear them talking. Maybe she wants them to leave !

    Wet Clothes

Didn't Okeefe & Merrit make a combo in the 50's without a spin but very high drying temp to make up for it?

    Does anyone know the make?

I would guess the washer hook up is near sink for plumbing. As for code requirements, DIY'er only use them for suggestions.

    Early Laundromat

I think this is a WPA work camp or something like that. I've seen the picture before and it was credited with some kind of government housing. I don't think you had to pay money to use them.

You Can Be Sure that I've never seen one of these...

The Westinghouse laundromat in my area when I was a kid, had a bank of these (maybe 6 or8 ). I saw them being used sometimes (mid 60's). They were later replaced with a row of dryers.

Sewage Smell Sign of FL Washer Spider Corrosion?

I worked with someone who bought a house with a washer and dryer left in the sale. They complained that the laundry room smelled of sewer and would dump bleach into the utility tub and floor drain all the time to get ride of the sewer smell. After a few months they had an office party and while...

    Fridge Identification

Energy Hog If you like vintage appliances or are making a vintage kitchen I don't thing that energy cost should be figured in. To me this is your hobby and the extra energy cost is like the supplies for your hobby. If you collected guns you would buy bullets, if you made quilts you would buy...

    1-18 Dryer

I recently rebuilt a 1-18 dryer. New seals, rollers, idler pulley, belt, heater, thermostat, lintscreen, the works. After all that it still sounded loud and ran ruff. It has a tinny feel to the whole thing, but dries well and the auto dry is right on- no over dry or under dry.

What year is this Whirlpool ?

I don't know what your clothes are made of but I used one for 15 years and washed everything from work jeans to sheer curtains to antique lace tablecloths and never once had any damage. I work at a museum and washed some pretty fragile things and nothing was damaged or shredded. I've heard this...

    Oily Stains on Clothes

They could be there from the washer, the dryer heat makes them stand out more than air drying. Ammonia works great on oil stains.
