    POD 4/28/2018

I've never seen a Frigidaire pair like that before. Was this the absolute bargain-basement BOL model for 1960?

    Tropicaire Air Conditioner

Tropic-Aire And from what I can tell, Tropic-aire made add-on heater systems for cars in the 1920s/30s. They used the same principle we know today of circulating hot coolant and using an electric fan to blow hot air. Hence the name "Tropic".

    Tropicaire Air Conditioner

The first home AC units were made to look like the cabinet radios of the time. Most of them, especially the very first models, required a water hook up and drain line return to cool the compressor. If you check the bottom of the console, you may find the fittings for a water hook-up.

    Curbside Finds - Whirlpool time!

Wow! Wow, congratulations! I'm going to assume these people had absolutely no clue what these were. If you had told me someone actually left a Whirlpool Mark XII set, mismatched or otherwise, out on the street for junk pickup and no pictures I don't think I could have believed it. It just...

    Best Vintage Dishwashers

I would have to say any KitchenAid with an upper spray arm. As much as I love the old '50s models, the failure to add an upper spray arm until into the 70s was a serious oversight. I think the next best vintage machines are the Sears Roto-Rack models. Built like tanks, and the roto-rack and...

    Mayonnaise

Real Russian mayonez The Russians love their mayonez. Here is a good homemade recipe for you, tovarisches. http://https//www.youtube.com/watch?v=saU3_xJJrCg&list=PLbS0HkS8Xsorrdr3pPk4lP80tUAzfyxP1&index=22

    Cascade Complete packs

Rinse aids could be problem I stopped using Electrasol several years ago because of sudsing and switched to Cascade Complete. Have not had any sudsing issues at all with Cascade Complete. I don't use Platinum because I don't really need the extra rinse-aids, so I don't know if it sudses or...

    Are gas wall heaters safe?

No Fan? I'm stumped as to why these furnaces don't have a blower fan. The wall furnaces I remember from Sears and Wards in the 70s-80s all had a fan at the top to distribute the heat. Blew downward and out the bottom. What you have seems to be popular in California, though. I would strongly...

Best Buy to Stop Selling CDs

Interesting. I think Best Buy is wrong on this one, but they're probably following Sears to the grave anyway, so it may not matter. Funny how things have changed in the audio world. I can remember when digital audio tapes were supposed to be the next big thing, and the recording industry...

Average American Washes Sheets Every 24 Days

Kids Today I don't understand where the millennials get this from. Maybe their parents are to blame, but their parents are my age, and we grew up knowing better. Tom, I'm afraid many of them have already stopped bathing. Kids today are like the Baby Boomers at their worst in the 60s/early...

    Are Tide Laundry Pods Edible?

But why Tide Pods, of all things? Other than color, they look exactly like Cascade dishwasher soap pods and you don't hear about people eating them.

    Sears final day sale; bargoon

Last day in more ways than one Sears is warning that they are "considering all options" if they don't get more financing to deal with their $1 Billion in debt. Don't know if this is just Lampert making threats to get a better deal, or if they are really about to pull the plug, but the...

    Vintage Laundromat Photos

Glasgow Steamie Launderess, that UK photo was taken in a Glasgow laundry/bath house. I had to do an image search to figure out what was going on there. If you Google "Glasgow steamie" you come up with a bunch of these, and from as late as the 60s even. Apparently Scotland was pretty...

    Vintage Laundromat Photos

Do Not Use Tide? Ok, in the first post, second picture, there is a sign saying "Do not use Tide, Fab, Wisk, or..." Cant read the rest. Does anyone know what that was about?

    POD 11/08/17 Westinghouse Top-Loader

HD X-mission That's some thick steel in the transmission housing. Heavy duty all right. Had no idea they were that heavy.

    More Sears/kmart closings

Bad Marketing Combo My impression is that K-mart/Sears was a bad combination, both financially and marketing-wise. Financially, Sears Holdings became too dependent on K-mart revenue to help keep them solvent. Marketing wise, K-mart had image problems. I don't think I have been in a K-mart in...

    House Beautiful - Circa 1979

Those 70s Colors My local grocery store has coffee mugs in Avocado Green, Harvest Gold, Poppy Red, and Colonial Blue. I got one of each yesterday. Only thing missing was Burnt Orange.

    House Beautiful - Circa 1979

Cuisinart My Cuisinart food processor is worth its weight in gold...their coffee makers, not so much. Something about them catching fire for no reason.

    House Beautiful - Circa 1979

Launderess, you are an absolute genius. Thank you for posting this. Had never heard of magazine before. I wish I could jump in the TARDIS and go back to '79. Harvest gold and earth-tones forever!

    Washloads of Terror: Halloween approaches...

Amityville KitchenAid This isn't from the movie, but an actual picture of the Defeo's kitchen in the Amityville horror house with a KDS-15 proudly displayed (and a screaming pumpkin).
