    Vintage Appliance Olympics

Super? I like this idea, but I wonder if this thread should be posted in the Super section. I posted something similar to this in the Imperial section, and it got moved over to the Super section. I was told that Imperial was strictly for vintage machines.

    Inside the 1958 GE dryer

Modern for the time. GE was well ahead of it's time in the 50's. It was one of few, if not the only, single belt drive system; while most other dryers, if not all, had the old belt and pulley drive. I'd say the roller drive is sturdier and smoother than today's dryers that wrap the belt around...

Tub Brake? The description in ways matches that of a Franklin washer, except the ad mentions the "power brake" with the lid safety switch. Franklin washers to this day never had a tub brake; the spin always coasted to a stop.

    Speaking of Speed Queens

Perf tub washer; 80's or later.

The dryer is definately a Franklin, but the washer seems like a Norge, with the "power brake." I understand that through the 70's, WCI used the mechanics from Franklin, Westinghouse, and Norge. So there was a lot of mixing and matching with models.

    Very old GE dryer!

GE's First Design This looks like GE's first dryer design. From my understanding, the concept was similar to that of the large commercial dryers with the down-flow heat. The heat source is at the top, and the fan is on the bottom, drawing the heated air down through the perforated cylinder. I...

Not a Speed Queen The Easy washer had a direct-drive tranny, which Speed Queen never had.

First Whirlpool Dryer in the Pittsburgh Metropolitian Area

You're right... ...that definately is the lint trap handle. In the old WP dryers with the belt-driven blower, the blower and lint screen is located on the top right corner. In the later models, even though the blower has been relocated, the filter kept it's place, to the present with many models.

Lint Filter in Old AZ Kenmore I created a thread a while back about an old Kenmore dryer my wife's folks had when she was little, in Phoenix AZ. She said the lint filter was on the bottom, and was an enormous screen that pulled out like a drawer. Her mother used to clean it with a vaccuum...

HiLoVane So in the 70's, when WCI took over, Hupp must've went "Hupp-2-3-4" out of the picture :p

    Easy washer POD

The Easy Life That washer is the early half of the 60's at latest. It has a solid tub and aluminum agitator. It is impressive to see a DD transmission made back in that time! Easy must have aimed to be a technologically advanced company. As for the dryer; at least in Canada I have never seen...

    Tips for videos-

Dryer Vids I'd also like to see videos of dryers in action. I know that watching a dryer running for a period of time is like watching paint dry (pardon the pun), but just a quick shot of it in operation, with good sound clarity, would be a bit intriguing. Showing one running with the inside...

    Jan. 5th 2010 POD - W O W !

Even in Canada... Kenmore was always a popular make here. About 50% of homes had Kenmores (or Inglises). When I was a kid, it seemed that many dryer exhaust vents sounded exactly like ours (we had an Inglis). The old belt and pulley WP design had a blower that was well heard. And many homes...

POD 01-04/10 Bendix Tumble Action Washer

All that's left now... We no longer have Philco Bendix in our homes, but the decendants that live today are Dexter commercial laundromat machines. In case you don't see the relationship; when Philco had the old top-loaders with the conventional agitator, there was an identical brand rebadged...
