    Philips Top Twin De Luxe

That very first picture is of the machine my mother had. Was just reminded that the wash tub lid was not attached to the machine as well, as is indicated by the picture. I had forgotten how much of a gap there was between the spin can and the machine - not as bad as some of the Rolls twin tubs...

    Philips Top Twin De Luxe

My Mum had a Philips Top Twin De luxe but it was considerably different to this machine so I guess it was an earlier/later model?!?! The Spinner lid was hinged on the right and it had a built in/hinged spin mat (pretty useless on reflection). There was much more chrome detail and a badge on the...

Ariel "Excel" Gel Causes Holes In Laundry?

I have been using it regularly since it was launched and can't say I have noticed any holes in my clothes!

Twin tubs were great in their day BUT

Size matters Twin tubs didn't get smaller, we just got bigger! I remember when I got a Hoover twin tub about 7 years ago I was amazed how small they seemed to me now. It is amazing that some of our Mum's did the family laundry in them - in my family's case there were six of us and the beds were...

    European vs American "HE" Detergents

Supermarket brand "That's why I switched to a supermarket brand that cleans aswell as Ariel and Persil but it is very low in suds and therefore rinses out very easily and doesn't really smell of anything" Which supermarket brand did you go for?

    Hotpoint WMD 960 Pre-wash

Panasonic NA147VB5 I bought this machine about 2 months ago and am completely over the moon with it! It is a 7kg 1400rpm machine which is plenty enough for me. The water levels are far higher than I ever imagined they would be on a new machine and it washes like a dream, as well as being very...

washer enthusiasts: what's your choice of vacuum?

I am more than happy with my Miele S5211 vacuum. It's powerful, quiet and does everything that I need from a vacuum. I have a Panasonic MC-E42 in the loft which I haven't used for years and should really try and sell it. That said, if I could get hold of a Hoover Junior U1104 or an Electrolux...

    New products for laundry......

My mother used terry nappies on all of us and would never have dreamt of using bleach on them. Soaked and then given a boil wash in Persil (which would have been a soap powder in the early/mid 1960's) and they were as white as snow AND soft, without the use of any softener (which I don't think...

Latest Fisher and Paykel front loaders with Keymatic wash plate...

Oh right, I didn't realise as RARELY look at buying a new machine and stumbled upon these advertised at Currys. I thought the price was steep but they do look stylish however I am not sure I would pay that when for a little more I could get a Miele (IF I was in the market for a new machine!)

OHHH Wash Day Labor Day, Such Drudgery. How About You?

Am I right in thinking that is your Servis Superglide?? Shame they didn't make a larger model that spin dried as opposed to the wringer but then with a round washtub perhaps the action wouldn't have been so vigorous!

    Original Persil

I can almost smell the Radiant and Ariel from here!!!

    Original Persil

Tide I remember my mum occasionally using Tide powder, which came in blue and white variants and along with Radiant, Drive (which had a wonderful scent) and Omo, Tide disappeared never to be heard of on this side of the pond. I take it that was biological also? When did Daz go from being non...

UK survey: single men don't change bed sheets

There are some gross single men out there...... Growing up in the family home the beds were changed weekly, a habit that was ingrained and has never left me. Given that we spend a third of our lives in bed (and given some of the things we get up to in them and in younger years the number of...

So you think you're washing at 60 degrees?

My Which magazine arrived today and given the article in yesterdays news about washing at 30 degrees, I was interested in reading this article (most of which I have tried to include here): The 60°C wash setting on washing machines frequently doesn't actually reach 60 degrees, Which? testing has...

    Rare twin tub?

I'm guessing it doesn't have a heater (although someone has asked the question of the seller and they have suggest otherwise), the spinner starts by pulling the lid over and the agi starts by switching to either of the 'On' positions with the usual recirculation, which takes care of emptying the...

Reversing on modern White Knight dryers et al?

I have a Zanussi condenser dryer which I bought (end of line) in 1999 and that reverses for a couple of seconds only. To be fair, it doesn't seem to cause an issue with tangling but I avoid drying large items like sheets and duvet covers in it as they ball up terribly.

    super silent vacuum cleaners

I have a Miele S5211 and I have to say that it's the quietest vacuum I have ever owned. It has a special setting which is designed for optimum performance and minimum noise which is the one I almost always use and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet and superbly efficient vacuum.
