I might be inclined to take that contractor to court for killing those rare bees. What they did was stupid and pointless. However, it might be more trouble than it's worth, as it could be hard to assess your loss from wild bees, no matter how rare. I'd certainly never hire that contractor again.

Facinating.   Never seen or even heard of the PennAir toaster before now. I imagine it's something of a collector item these days. Probably went for at least what the seller was asking ($500?)...

I second Jon's suggestion. Gas leaks are best dealt with ASAP, especially in winter when windows are closed.    

Well, there may be a 3rd solution. Give the vendor a call, telling them that the terminal end of the element is bent. Ask them what they recommend. That way they know you're in good faith. Perhaps they'll ask you to return it. Or perhaps they are used to such mishaps as Combojohn suggests, and...
