    Sarah's House discouragement

I might be inclined to take that contractor to court for killing those rare bees. What they did was stupid and pointless. However, it might be more trouble than it's worth, as it could be hard to assess your loss from wild bees, no matter how rare. I'd certainly never hire that contractor again.

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

Well, that's an interesting question, Dan. I assume the city is aware of the well here, since it was in the advertisement when I bought the property. As I recall.   I do recall the well sometimes going dry before the nearby sewer work was done. Since then it's been quite reliable. I figure I'm...

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

Dan,   When I bought this place in the East Bay it already had a well on the property. Powered by an electric pump, which I had to replace about 15 years or so ago. I was told when I bought the house that it's not potable water, so I only use it to water the front lawn and gardens.   Last...

Toaster Oven Thread ... what's on your counter?

Just checked my toaster oven inventory.   The big Oster is still in the main kitchen. The Cuisinart is in the patio kitchen. Haven't used either in years. Part of the reason is the skyrocketing cost of electricity in California. And that I'm now on a special reduced rate outside of 4 pm and 9...

Biden admin proposes more stringent efficiency standards

Well, I looked through the DOE proposal and didn't see much on the effect on hot water clothes washer results. But then it's a long tome and didn't have time to read everything in it.   Here's a link to the DOE proposal. Hey, it's only 376 pages!      ...

    Cruise-O-Matic: Part Ten

The only "new" car I ever had was a top-of-the-line sedan I won in a raffle. The raffle tickets cost me $300. One of the raffle organizers had already put about 1,000 miles on it, so it wasn't exactly new. Still have it; it's my main ride when I drive. In pretty good shape, aside from some minor...

    Old Penn-Air Toaster

Facinating.   Never seen or even heard of the PennAir toaster before now. I imagine it's something of a collector item these days. Probably went for at least what the seller was asking ($500?)...

Hell, I still use hot wash for some things.

    Gas smell in oven

I second Jon's suggestion. Gas leaks are best dealt with ASAP, especially in winter when windows are closed.

Will a Heating Element Failure Damage My Oven?

Well, there may be a 3rd solution. Give the vendor a call, telling them that the terminal end of the element is bent. Ask them what they recommend. That way they know you're in good faith. Perhaps they'll ask you to return it. Or perhaps they are used to such mishaps as Combojohn suggests, and...

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

All the Wedgewood stoves I used at rentals had standing pilot lights both in the burners and oven. They were probably of a later vintage than Stan's.

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

And speaking of Wedgewood ranges... a little googling reveals that the factory that built these gems was in Newark, California, which is a town in the East Bay. This explains why Wedgewood was in so many flats and apartments when I grew up here.   Wedgewood went out of business in the early...

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

Eddie,   Actually, the photo in post #137 is of a man in a brown suit with his head buried in the sand.   And the range in this photo is most certainly a Wedgewood. It's got the Wedgewood emblem on the back panel:  ...

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

OK, some observations:   1) Yes, standing pilot lights can measurably increase indoor pollution, because standing pilot lights are on 7x24. But the solution for that has been available since the 1970's, and that is spark ignition, which completely eliminates the need for a standing pilot...
