    direct drive discussion

"only does it on the wash drain and not the rinse drain...maybe something is starting to go out on it?" Is the washer in a cold location? Cold gearcase oil can cause the neutral drain mechanism to malfunction. Whirlpool had a bulletin on this. Doesn't do it in rinse because oil has warmed up...

Do I need a tub seal for my Kenmore DD?

Open control panel, remove two cabinet clips, disconnect lid switch connector, tilt cabinet forward and pull away from base. What part are you having trouble with?

    Spin Drain vs Neutral Drain

You can add a simple relay to a BD to get spin drain. Iv'e shown that here but actual wiring will depend on specific model. Wiring diagrams are different, some have suds valves...etc. Relay switch is normally closed. No power through it when washer is filling. When pressure switch goes to full...

    Spin Drain vs Neutral Drain

It cannot spin until the water level switch is in empty position and the 2 minute drain period has ended. Timer chart that I have for a belt drive shows a 2 minute drain period.

    Spin Drain vs Neutral Drain

"Spin-drain can be done by holding the water level switch at mid-position, or at reset" That won't work because the timer won't be closing it's contact for the spin solenoid until the drain period (2-4-5 minutes or whatever it is for belt drives) has ended.

It continues... The ongoing saga of the Inglis

The upper brake drum set screw goes into the spin tube, not against the agitator shaft. The set screw should not prevent the basket drive from being pulled off the agitator shaft. That retaining ring is to hold the lower brake drum to the clutch plate with yoke and brake pad in between so that...

It continues... The ongoing saga of the Inglis

"I forget what activates the spin clutch when the wigwag calls for spin, anybody chime in here" The spin cam bar is pulled towards back of washer allowing clutch shaft to drop, yoke drops which allows brake spring pressure to press clutch against pulley.

    Spin Drain vs Neutral Drain

"On most machines, the drain is like 5 minutes" Neutral drain on Whirlpool DD's is 2 minutes. What machine has a 5 minute neutral drain?

    Spin Drain vs Neutral Drain

"Coriolis effect, might be a reason. however, just to note Ive seen older GEs spin counter clockwise while other spin drain washers spin clock wise like speed queen" You actually fell for that one ;-) The coriolis effect has absolutely no discernable effect on your washer draining nor any...

    Spin Drain vs Neutral Drain

A simple timer swap would not do it. Most likely, in addition to a different timer, they would be using an electric pump or a major design change in the drivetrain.

    Clarification of terms

There is also the Fisher Paykel smart drive design, which came out in 1990, that is used in some Whirlpool models. No belt, no transmission, motor drives agitator/basket directly and is also refered to as a direct drive washer.

Speed Queen the Only "Sane" Modern Washer Left?

Iv'e seen stripped spin gears and worn agitate cams in DD's half that age and even some less than 10 years old. I think it just depends on how heavily used they are and how overloaded with clothes. Overloading washing machines is about the worst thing you can do to them.

Speed Queen the Only "Sane" Modern Washer Left?

"I have NEVER seen a single failure of this nylon gear." Iv'e seen lots of stripped spin gears in DD gearcases. These are not nylon by the way. Iv'e even seen one where a section of the gear broke completely off. The plastic agitate cam can also wear to the point that the agitate gear does...

Speed Queen the Only "Sane" Modern Washer Left?

So, the control board doesn't care if lid switch is never cycled? Some washers with electronic control will disable the washer if it doesn't detect opening/closing of the lid within a certain number of wash cycles.

Whirlpool LSQ9564JQ0 Troubleshooting - Spin Cycle Noise

I'm talking about the agitate cam inside the gearcase. That is the most likely problem. Shift actuator is also inside the gearcase. Sounds like it would be best for you to just replace the gearcase.

Whirlpool LSQ9564JQ0 Troubleshooting - Spin Cycle Noise

That was my first thought as well but after noticing the improperly installed agitator clip, I thought you should rule that out first. If yours sounds like the one in this video, then the problem is the agitate gear in the gearcase is not fully disengaging during spin. This is usually caused by...

Whirlpool LSQ9564JQ0 Troubleshooting - Spin Cycle Noise

On this washer and all DD's that have the fabric softener dispenser, the agitator shaft is in fact driven. It is driven by that metal clip and plastic washer there in your photo. That clip is supposed to be down on the smooth part of the agitator shaft, not up on the splined part. That may be...

    speed

Whirlpool service manuals state 640-650 for high speed, 425-429 for low speed (2 speed machines). Input pinion to main drive gear ratio is 9.58, spin gear (same rpm as main drive gear) to spin pinion gear is 3.61. Motor high speed rpm is 1725, low is 1140. That works out to 650 for high and 429...
