    Modern Living: Part Six

If you could still get one of those houses for $16,990, I'd say the cost of adding A/C wouldn't be a dealbreaker. Wonder what those neighborhoods look like today?

Neat, and I also love how the seller specifies that the cases of beer don’t come with it.

POE 5-8-19 Coupon for Tide in Kelvinator Washer

If my superficial web search is right, hubby is now 71 or 72, so if this ad is 50 years old, he wasn’t that far out of diapers himself! Which raises the question: How did P&G’s ad agency find these “real people” and how were they compensated? I’m guessing they contacted people who had bought...

    Haier's success with GEappliances

An article from October says: LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A Kentucky-based home appliances business says it will add 400 jobs as part of a $200 million investment at its sprawling Louisville operation. GE Appliances on Monday announced plans to expand its laundry and dishwasher production at...

    Servel Natural Gas Refrigerator

Thank you, Bob, I didn't know that about the Astrodome. I wonder if low gas prices might bring back gas AC in some applications? The Bob and Ray clip is just a comedy bit, as Mr. Science can't really explain how a flame creates cold.

URGENT: My '57 GE Combination -- Is it Done For?

I admire your determination in sticking with this. Surprised you got anything other than a flat “no,” so that’s something, anyway. Hope it works out.

    Kitchenaid pair

I have the washer, but it’s currently inoperable because of a timer problem, and the timer is NLA. It could probably be fixed but nobody seems to know anything about these rapid advance timers any more.

    ~1940 * Leonard fridge

Kelvinator called its compressor the Polarsphere. I’m sure I’ve seen it pictures in some vintage ads from around 1940, and it was spherical, but I can’t find an example right now. Later ads picture a “Polarsphere” compressor that looks fairly conventional, more like a Tecumseh, which maybe it was.

1937 Frigidaire Deluxe - Compressor Problem....

I’ve watched all the videos and (spoiler alert) what a happy outcome! You do such a meticulous job. So interesting to see an original Meter Miser not only taken apart but put back together again. It proves it can be done. I guess the design is the Norge Rollator in a more compact, lightweight...

    The “Woolite” of Dishwasher detergents

I would suspect even a small amount of regular Dawn in a dishwasher would cause major oversudsing. Years ago (1987 or so) I tried to use Fulsol, a degreaser put out by the Fuller Brush Company, in a Hotpoint dishwasher and it was a near disaster.

    Whirlpool 240 volt Combo announced

This article suggests there can be a problem with the longevity of electric motors even when they’re marked 208/230 volts, if the voltage dips much below 208. http://www.brithinee.com/technical-articles/240-vs-208-volts-do-motors-care/

Waking up a few Antique Fridges...

Fun stuff! It’s almost like being there (although you can never be sure if it comes across the same in a recording.) Impressions: The GE seems to be a mighty smooth, quiet machine. After thinking it over, the chugging Norge reminds me of something Wile E. Coyote ordered from Acme. I seem to...
