If you could find a KitchenAid washer with a 3 speed motor and the bigger base agitator I would say go for it. You get a gentler agitation on the slower speed but at the same time lose none of the effectual turnover and cleaning power.

I have a GE portable also bought 2 years ago. The auto sense cycle is about 1 1/2 hours if the machine does not detect a very dirty load. The light wash cycle is also good which runs 48 minutes. I would have bought the Whirlpool but they were having problems with shipments a couple of years ago...
