My Kenmore direct drive which is 20 years old, does this. On the Normal cycle, it starts agitating fast, then it slows down for the rest of the cycle. The Permanent Press/Delicate cycle agitates slow, while the Heavy Duty cycle agitates fast.

Yes it shifted down during the permanent press cycle also. My family bought this model brand new in 68, in avocado. Ours had the rotoflex agitator until it was swapped out for a rotoswirl like this machine has now. It lasted until 93, when the timer gave up the ghost.

Jed, I forgot to ask you this when I posted earlier. On these earlier models where the water temperature just says hot, warm, or cold like it does on my machine that I bought 17 years ago, is the rinse temperature cold like it is on my DD machine, or is it different?

I had a transmission pulley separate from it's own hub during a cycle. Yes that's the same tell tale noise mine did before it separated. This was on a 68 800 model with a steel pulley in it. I would think that if it was the bearings going bad, you would hear them get higher in pitch as the basket's rpm increased. At least that's what a wheel bearing does. It sounds like the brakes are wearing out. I would inspect them first. I hope this helps.
