research help: why did front loaders drop off from 70s-00s?

And may people in the country kept their wringer washer in the bathroom because the bathtub was used to rinse the clothes.....prior to the family farmhouse getting hydro in 1949 Mom tells me my Grandmother kept her gas powered machine in the shed year round, and heated all the hot water for it...

Here in Canada top loaders were more the norm....I only recall seeing two front loaders growing up....the McAlpines had a Westinghouse and my Uncle's Mom had a combination which I also believe was a Westinghouse which she prolly got after their farmhouse burned down in 1965 and they moved to...

1954 Whirlpool Supreme Washing Machine - For Sale $60

That button to open the lid reminds me of identical ones on a 1958 Inglis set my Mum had many years ago....1950s gimmachry at its best, but there were not very durable as I recall. The dryer outlasted the washer by ten or so years, but it was very difficult to get the door open and the plastic...

    Whirlpool Agitators

My mother had a 1958 Inglis Royale and a 1968 Inglis Sterling with the Surgilator and both foamed pretty heavily at least with the detergents of the day.

    Inside the 1958 GE dryer

Foot Pedals GE sure was in love with foot pedals in those days. My parents' first fridge when they moved to their new house in St Lambert in 1958 had a foot pedal to open the door.

    Kitchen Aid Ad 1959

Page 5 of 6 which is pg 9 of the original paper. I think most families would simply have made the half dozen plus kids wash the dishes.

Did June Cleaver ever have a dishwasher?

We got a GE dishwasher in 1965, a Filter Something or Another. It was a top loader, and there was also a little spray arm under the cutlery basket. It was replaced in 1976 by a built in Kitchen Aid. As for the GE Fridges my parent's first one was a 1958 model much as described here-foot pedal to...

    Candidate for worst new dishwasher????

I am putting up with it for the short term until I move into something permanent. Even the BOL Maytag at $400 I installed in my last house was a lot better, albeit even noisier.

    General Electric Ads late 1950s

I can just see Nancy vacumning! And yes they did need the cash, one of the reasons cited in his biography for moving aside from needing a bigger house was the fact the GE was willing to foot much of the bill so long as the place was used to showcase a modern all electric home owned by a movie...

    The New Maytag

We had a 1976 Maytag set in Harvest Gold that had the smaller tub but a dark enamel tub, as mentioned above this might have been a Canuck thing. Also had a suds saver. The model was not as deluxe as yours however. My mother got rid of them in 1994 when she wanted white appliances, the Maytags...

    Model Names on Washers

Come to think of it the GE kitchen appliances we had 1976-1994 were "Talisman 850" models, I believe their lower end models were "Medallion" and that also applied to Filter Flo washers as well. The cheapie line was "Encore" as I recall.
