Looking at Vacbear's post, third from the bottom in British Rarities, he shows us a Frigidaire Jetamatic. I didn't know UK had any of the up-and-down models and was wondering about them, is it a 3 ringer, a 3 stage rocket, or the 5 stage jet?

Then I dialed up the POD to find very satisfying pix and text of the 1-18, and Eureka! Check out Model W3-224, and how similar it is to the UK Model, Close, but no cigar, I know, but still.

And I'm admiring all the things the TOL 1-18 can do, soak-to-wash (yes?) and appreciating how much fun you must have with them. I don't own one.

Great POD and happy to learn our Brit Bros have pulsators.
 
I know we've seen a ton

of thumpers downunder, and I've heard Mike say they have no unimatics in the U.K.. so I wanted to know about other Frigidiare machines in the UK, and to hear what 1-18 owners, here, have to say about their beauties.
 
Love it!

Mine is a'75 Harvest gold and we love it. It is pretty much our daily driver along with the '65 Roller-Matic and '65 Maytag. it is amazing the turnover these machines have and very satisfied with how well it cleans, plus they are a lot gentler on your clothes than the "thrashers". The only downside is they are a tad noisey. If you can get ahold of one grab it.

There is no machine that ever existed that's more fun to use than a Frigidaire 1-18 or Rollermatic. As Saltysam said, the turnover is great and the cleaning is very effective. Like a Harley Davison motorcycle, they have a sound and feel that's all their own. It's never boring, never duplicated.

I just recently started testing a Whirlpool Duet, and it reminds me of a soccer mom's Chrystler minivan. I believe my 1-18 at least equals the front loader's performance. The only edge the Duet has over the Frigidaire is capacity, and the capability of handling a large comforter. There is some water savings with the front loader, but both machines have identical extraction capabilities.

I've used lots of 1-18s but there's some thing which perplexes me. In teh specs chart in the ad, the slow spin speed is rated at 420/435 rpms and fast is at 630/650 rpms. And please do not tell me, unless you can prove it, that these variances reflect the shift from low to high spin speed while it's spinning and draining the water.
 
Could it have something to do with the power available.

slightly slower at 110v and slightly faster at 115 or 120v whichever is the highest you can get without switching to 230/250v...

As an example, our kettle is rated at 230-240v and will draw 2000-2200 watts. If the incoming power is at the lower end, it will take slightly longer to boil...the same may be true of the spin speed. It will spin slightly slower on 110v than it will on say 115v/120v...

Mind, I may be completely wrong....but it would be worth looking at the rating plate and seeing if there is a voltage variance along the lines of 110-120v

During the film, you'll notice Daniel Day Lewis helping his "Paki" boyfriend get rid of a fleet of what I assume are Rollermatics( I found the scene painful to watch). Don't know if they were available to the home market but I'd guess so.

"Alice" and Mark. You're making me want one for Christmas. Glad to hear they're so wonderful. Have heard conflicting reports about turnover, something to the effect that the water level needs to be between the first & second rocket stages from the top to achieve maximum turnover. but of you guys marvel at the 1-18's turnover that's good enough for me.

Mark I blew up your pic. What is that cool-looking terrain your standing in front of ? So unusual.

I was always curious about the allure of the 1-18, and why so many members liked them so much. I'm beginning to understand. Is the circle jet spray rinse one of the clinchers?

That's a help, yes. But there's more to it than that. That big, wide, rocket agitator. Well, it's like a rocket; what can I say? I love rockets, BIG rockets. I guess GM made their washing machines to mimic a moon launch with every load. But, instead of a plume of smoke, you would get a ring of SUDS!

For me

It's just so big, lavish, and powerful. One thing I love about a 1-18 is as soon as the Jet-Circle finishes filling the tub it "Jumps" to life with a great powerful roar! As long as you've loaded it properly results are fantastic.

rockets, moon launch mimicry, plumes of smoke, ring of suds--I love it.

And you know what else: the big-finned, multi-pieced agitators took up a ton of space, while the trim sleek conical 1-18 rocket leaves so much more room for laundry. Have heard people say that it is among the best in capacity.

Ken, I don't know how I missed that scene, but I'm still sure that our Chestermike said he had to come to America to see a Unimatic; thus, maybe the UK has only the jetcone editions of the Frigidiare. We'll know soon enough.

With Frigidaire

Proper loading is done in quadrants, think of an X across the tub, stacking things in on top of each other in quadrants instead of just pitching them in any old way. It will perform better and tangle things less by utilizing this manner of loading. It also helps the solid-tub Frigidaires balance out better.
 
Bob...

....it may not affect the frequency of pulsates per minute as the motor may not need to draw all its' wattage to perform this function, yet in spin, which is a heavy power drain, will draw it all as the motor is running at capacity.

Still, someone on here will have the correct answer as I am only hypothesising....

That would be of the Bad Lands in South Dakota. Wife and I took a 7 state motorcycle trip this summer and this is one, among many, places we visited. If you ever get a chance to go through the Bad Lands you will love it. It is absolutely beautiful!

Frigidaire Jetamatic

Hi Mickey, yes we had the usual Frigidaire Coin-Op machines in the launderettes with the window in the washlid, and all in pastel colours, our local had all turquoise coloured machines!!

We also had the domestic Frigidaire Jetamatic, I take it this was your Rollamatic version?? the only difference being it had a 3kw heater, the two controls are RHS timer, LHS Fabric Type & Heater setting,
