I picked up a 1-18 a while back, but didn't have room for it and not much time to tinker with it, so it ended up in my dad's garage. We knew that it needed a belt once we took the front off .. shredded belt was still barely hanging on. My dad found a belt to fit, so he put it on today ... now it takes in water, pumps out water, spins fine and the timer is good ... but no agitation. I did not get to look at it, but he says it looks like the rollers are slipping or not making contact well enough for agitation. Does this sound correct, or did he possibly just cause a new problem while fixing the old one? He's extremely handy, so I am surprised that he can't get it agitating. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!!!!!!!! Todd

1-18 Repair

Hey Todd, take the rollers out of the machine and use some butane lighter fluid on a rag to clean the rollers.....There should be 2 different sized rollers......one is for the spin and the other for the agitation...The shaft that is attached to the pulley and pump will probably need to be cleaned up also. take some 0000 steel wool and clean up the shaft and also the large wheel is the agitate wheel.......use the steel wool on the entire surface of this also. While you have the rollers out of the machine make sure that they will move back and forth within the holder that is attached to it. they should be able to spring back and forth...The don't move much but they do need to move. Also make sure the rollers spin freely, if not then more than likely they will need to be replaced......hope this helps you out........

Thanks

Thanks for such a quick reply. I will definitely do as you suggested and will let you know how I make out. That's why I love this club because everyone is so helpful to folks like me; I love the older machines but have limited technical abilities when it comes to repairs. Thanks for the help. Todd

Thanks for the help

Anytime Todd, although my knowledge is limited there are quite a few members that have a vast knowledge of these older machines...and you are right, everyone is very helpful to us "dummies" lol but you gotta start learning about it somewhere, right....

One thing i forgot to mention with the 1-18's. They will not agitate unless the pressure switch is satisfied. Which means that if there's not enough water in the tub in relation to the specified water level setting it will not start to agitate.....I found this out when i got my 1-18's and just wanted to try things out before i got them moved into place and all hooked up. Also i took the rollers out of mine and cleaned them up before i moved it in place. The rollers on mine were kind of stiff and didn't want to move back and forth freely and also seemed a little tight trying to spin them by hand. I put a very small amount of light weight oil and worked the roller back and forth till it would spin freely. Don't use a lot of oil or the rollers will sling it all over the place and they will really slip. Mine were just gunked up and need to be cleaned really well.......

Thanks so much

I thought that I posted this earlier, but evidently I did not ... damn, the brain is going rapidly. Anyway, I wanted to say a heartfelt "thank you" for the help and suggestions that I got on the 1-18. I am happy to say that we are up and running beautifully. It has the window lid, too. You folks on the forum are so kind and a wealth of information. Take care and thanks again for walking us through the repair. Todd
