My kid brother send me a text yesterday regarding their LG top loader. A washer enthusiast friend of fine tells me it may NOT be mold but rather a seal degrading. To anyone with a suggestion, it is much appreciated. Read on.

Our LG washer has been leaving black mold deposits on our clothes after each wash (a little smaller than an eraser head - 10+ spots for each piece of clothing). They are soft and smear if you do t remove them just right. We've been running a lot of tub clean loads with bleach and have also used washer cleaning tablets. We leave the washer open between loads. The machines are about 10 years old. Any suggestions or is this what end of life looks like...

The pic shows the dark flecks scrapped off on to a paper towel.

LG washplate washer

I junked one of those several years ago because seal failed, ruined bearings and damaged the motor. The motor was a direct drive BLDC "pancake" motor. If motor would have been ok,might have done a bearing/seal repair. Also the spline in the plastic base SS washplate was undersized for the job and nearly stripped-that last situation a design flaw IMO.
