Letting them go dead sitting idle is one of the quickest ways to kill a battery. I have an old Cherokee that sits in a garage in Mexico for months between starts, the new Costco battery lasted less than a year. The best thing besides keeping them charged is location, Mercedes puts most behind the firewall, isolating them from the hot engine compartment. My C-Class has averaged 8 years battery life since 2002, and that's parking outside in Phoenix. It might even be worth relocating a battery to the trunk, or under the bed of a pickup truck.

My old "95 Silverado's factory battery lasted 9 years and my "13 Silverado factory battery also lasted 9 years. But my old "81 Corvette would chew up a battery every year unless it was disconnected when sitting for any length of time.
Just had a happy surprise...got back to Detroit after a month away--to a dead battery on the Saab. AAA came out to replace--to tell me it was from 2017 (I was sure I'd replaced it in 2021-2022...could remember exactly which store where I bought it, but it's that COVID era fuzziness about times/dates.
