Cannot speak to Europe or elsewhere in world, but here in USA not all 18" dishwashers are in small space situations. Nor are they regulated to those who perhaps are price sensitive.
Rather it's a combination of factors including fact we're a few generations into an age where people (as in Americans for purpose of this thread) simply know no other way of washing dishes other than using a dishwasher. That and or they simply flat out refuse to hand wash dishes, period.
An 18" or even countertop dishwasher may suit a single or two person household. Even if there is room in their kitchen for a full sized unit household doesn't generate enough dishes to fill the thing daily. It could take a few or several days (maybe a week?) to fill up a full sized unit, but that presents other issues. First and foremost household would require a supply of dish and glass ware such they could go several days without running DW.
One had no idea there were now so many other 18" dw on USA market. Far as built in goes there is a vast array of offerings including those by Frigidaire, GE, Danby, Honeywell, Bosch, Miele, Haier, Samsung and Bertazzoni
