I am looking to buy an 18" dishwasher. What brand would you recommend?

This 18-inch Bosch from Sears is super-quiet. Sears has quite a few dishwashers of the same size to choose from.

Not too many make the 18" DW. Sears still does. I had one about 15 years ago and it worked fine. But I'm sure they've changed a lot (gotten cheap with the materials like everything else), since then.
18" Dishwashers Are Becoming More Common
When we purchased ours >10 years ago there basically were only one domestic made option; Frigidare also sold by Sears under their Kenmore brand. Miele and IIRC a few other European brands had them as well but only as built-in,whilst the Fridigaire came as portable as well.
Looking at the Sears.com link provided above there are now many more options than before for 18" dishwashers. One assumes this caters to more and more persons not wishing to be without such a thing even if the kitchen/area for one is small. Indeed according to a NYT article in the real estate section several weeks ago one of the main deal breakers for selling a home in this area is the lack of a dishwasher. NYC residents seems have grown to expect their homes to have a dw when possible.
For years builders of rental and even some co-op or condo apartments forbid the installation of dishwashers out of concerns for old plumbing along with water and sewer costs. However all new construction for all but the lowest income housing (which is hardly being built anyway) in this area have dishwashers. Thus if you want to sell your home and or keep property values up so do you.

Don't....... if you can possibly avoid them, you are only saving 6" of space, I would buy a smaller range, refrigerator or give up a little more cabinet space first, it is never that hard to find 6", finding 8" or more is much harder. But seriously I have never seen a 18" DW that was all that great or one that I would have in my kitchen, at best they only hold 1/2 the dishes that a full 24" machine does and they are not as water and energy efficient to use when you figure in how little they hold.

Agree... get the bigger one. There seems to be a lot 18'' ones for sale on Craigslist. The chief complaint,they don't clean as well as a full size dishwasher.

My little 18" does quite well in the cleaning department, especially when using good phosphate laden dw detergent. However being an older mechanical timer unit it does use more water than today's unit that pretty much tinkle on dishes.

Small correction: That is a tall tub model, but not an XL. Tall tub means no extra part under the door like older dishwashers had.

It's a European standard tub or, in the US, it would classify as ADA-compliant.
