Here's a 1920's clock that's been in Helen's family for years. Works perfectly.

Nice clock. Has it never been cleaned or serviced in all these years, that would be surprising as a lot of them do need one eventually, a cleaning at least. Kit Kat clocks, one of my favorites along with cuckoo's

Helen says she doesn't remember it being service or cleaned, or maybe it has once or twice in its lifetime. I don't know, but so far, it's running good so I'll leave it at that. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm hoping someone here can give me a year or decade this clock was made. I'll guess the 20's.

That type of clock (black clock) should be serviced about every five years. The bushings will wear until the clock will just not even run anymore. A cleaning and oiling should be done on that one Jason. It will cost you much more to re-bush the clock in a few years.

I think Rick is simply referring to the finish on the case. I gave my wife a Sessions similar to this one for Christmas '97. It has a date on the inside of the rear door of 1939, the year it was purchased new by the original owners. They were friends of my mother's parents, and I purchased it at their estate sale. My mother has an Ingraham that is also the same shape, and that one has a date of 1895 on the inside of the back door. This style was very popular for many years.

The square mantle clocks are known as "black clocks" to clock repair/antique people. The style was poplular from about 1870 to about 1910. The next type of mantle clocks were not shaped the same, and the cases were not as ornate.

There's something reassuring about the ticking and chimi

Here's a picture of my (great-great-grandmother's) Sessions Black Mantle Clock. Sorry for the poor quality of the picute, but the clock makes up for it.

For six generations, this clock has been telling us the time. Grandma remembers laying awake in bed at night, listening to the clock chime the hours, waiting for my dad, aunt, and uncle to come home at night.

I'm a little behind on reading your posting. That is a beautiful clock. I love the tone of the chime. I have several old clocks including my grandpa's old "kitchen clock" which I've just cleaned and oiled. I have no idea how old it is. My mom is 83 and says this clock has been around for as long as she can remember. I'll try to get a picture posted soon.
