We had one of these...

My parents had this box from before I was born until they moved out of the city in 1985. It was moved out of daily use sometime in the sixties when it could no longer keep up with the eight people living in our house, down to the basement where it ran on as the backup refrigerator and beverage cooler.

The round thing beneath the door is a knob for opening a tilt-out bin. I don't know what was supposed to go there, but my mother kept pot & pan lids and potholders in it, and it was an endless source of play materials for me and my siblings. It made a characteristic noise opening up and hitting the stop with a clunk. It was also pretty warm in there I guess because of proximity to the refrigeration equipment.

That was a *tiny* freezer with no automatic defrost. Ice cubes were a precious commodity, and we kids could never use them. To this day I prefer non-chilled water right from the tap, all because of that little freezer.

The little glass tray between the freezer and the meat compartment was discovered by my Dad to be the optimal place to freeze Milky Way candybars, a favorite of his. Since we always had a lot of them there, we could enjoy them more often than we could ice.

Missing from this one but always present in ours is a milky glass rectangular dish about 3" deep, on the bottom next to the vegetable crisper. In this were kept eggs that were delivered to our house right from the farm every Saturday morning by a friendly old gent named Tierney.

My parents really lucked into some high-quality appliances, this refrigerator and the 1949 GE automatic washer featured in the other forum as being recincarnated by Robert Unimatic.

This fridge is very similar to the one my neighbor gave to me back when I was a teenager. Mine though was a 1948 model. I kept it in the basement of my parent's house for storing photography supplies, and my stash of food for my friends and I. The freezer on mine goes all the way across the top, so there's enough room for a few ice cream boxes and some ice trays. Mechanically, this one looks just like mine, with the same exact compressor. Cosmetically, the shape of the exterior is the same, but mine had a square Fridigaire logo with a large chrome "V" on the door, instead of the round medallion at the bottom.

I sold mine on E-bay a couple of years ago. I believe someone from A.W. from the Maryland area bought it. These are really fun fridges, and they are even reasonably efficient too!
