Today I put a bottle on my 1949 Maytag gas Dutch Oven, and the fool thing fired right up and works like new. I've had it in storage 17 years and never expected it to work. So far I've baked corn bread, an angel food cake, ham, and a sweet potato pecan casserole in the oven, and fried bacon on the top, made sweet potatos in a pressure cooker, and even cory glass vacuum coffee. I just love the range and will post photos when I can.

Mine is a very basic model without a clock or light, and not incorporating the automatic shut off feature, although it does cook using retained heat if operated that way manually.

We had a Maytag stove

with a standard oven from 1957 to 1985. It was a 40 incher, and had a small oven (maybe 20 inches wide) and a nice side storage compartment.

I learned to cook on that stove, and wish I had it today (I'd do as full a restoration as I could.) However, the oven burner had begun to rust very badly, and Ma and I were dubvious about its safety.

We replaced it with a very nice Maytag badged Hardwick gas stove....with a 30 inch oven. Oh, the first Thanksgiving we had it, we were SO glad to have the extra oven space, we just smiled at each other and laughed. We took side dishes to the family Thanksgiving reunion, which was, at that time, literally up the street from us.

Bob, the "Dutch Oven" is a prize! I wish wish wish manufacturers would make a superinsulated oven these days!

Thank you for a wonderful memory.

Chambers?

You want a super-insulated oven? My dream is a Chambers model B with the high back and the sconce lights. One day, it will be mine, with a full kitchen and laundry room of vintage companions. I'm not greedy, I just know what I want!

Congrats on the great dutch oven,
Dave
