Fill

Just wanted to share the first wash pictures of the 1952 Hotpoint. It is not quite 100% automatic as the timer isn’t working but I couldn’t resist testing it out. I am timing the cycles according to the manual I have printed out from the web site.

A greatly appreciative thanks to Robert, gansky1, Jon, and everyone else for the advice, effort, and literature provided. It was very exciting to see the old machine spring back to life.

Wash

I notice that I don’t have the Thriftilator agitator per the manual, don’t suppose anyone knows where one of these is? None-the-less the clothes do seem to be moving around as they should.

Just wanted to relay the story about the motor being tested. The two guys at the electrical motor shop must have seen me walking across the parking lot because when I walked through the door the one said, “we don’t work on those things!” I said, “can you at least tell me if its any good?” so he got out some battery cables with a flashlight on one end and said “Only two wires?” I said “yes”, so he turns to his buddy and says “A red wire and a green wire - I don’t trust it”, and the other guy says “Me neither!” So they treat it like a little nuclear bomb but I can tell the test is going well. “The motor ain’t your problem, kid”.

So I went home and put the motor back in – that process did fix the machine, though.

Spin

While my kids were on the stairs to the deck and looking down watching I ran through a spin test with the skin of the machine off. They got real quiet and were amazed at the water moving to the side of the tub and draining off through the top. Kinda like watching the Red Sea part.

Lighted control

In the picture it looks like there is some discoloration but the glass is pure white and looks like new.

An interesting side note: My mother dropped by to see the grandchildren and took a look at my new acquisition. She told me that in 1961 She and dad bought a used washer – a Hotpoint that to her recollection looked exactly like this one. She remembers when the timer failed and it just kept filling and filling and filling – which is the same problem this machine has. Anyway I though something significant in that but I don’t know what.

The wash test was a success and again thanks to all.

All that hard work paid off ....

It's beautiful, Brain. Just beautiful! Congratulations on getting it up and running again and thanks for saving this wonderful machine!

I hope that you enjoy it for many years to come.

Oh Brian the Hotpoint is beautiful!!!! It looks brand new, did you paint the cabinet already? Thank you so much for posting such great pictures. I've never seen that agitator cap before either, I suspect that was the very first time that Hotpoint introduced their long neck style agitator.

Wow, what a MINT Hotpoint, congrats on getting it up and running! It looks brand new! Love that straight-vane agitator and "Counter Flo Water Action" cap as well!

Hi Neighbor!

I love it! Do you have some other machines? That's an awesome machine. Say, could you tell me where you found that one? I'm having a heck of a time finding washers like this in the good ol' Northwest. Congrats!

Hotpoint!

Brian,
This is a real beauty. The first washer I came in contact was a 55 hotopint. My parents got it shortly after I was born. The agitator in the machine was the standard Hotpoint agitator except for the more expensive models. Ours had a removable hamper lid. But by 55 most of their lids opened to the left. I like yours better with the rear opening lid. I think but am not sure from some of these readings the 52 had very different internal parts than the 55 which I had heard they made changes. Best of luck.

Very nice classic Hotpoint Brian! The machine looks to be in mint condition. I am sure you can have the timer rebuilt with no problems. Best of luck with that
