1954 Philco Refrigerator Repair Manual

Hi, All,

I am wondering if anyone out there has access to a Philco refrigerator repair manual covering the V-Handle models? I am still struggling with my Tru-Zone in the refrigerator compartment freezing up (has been for years now). I am trying to access the cold control, but don't want to break the plastic pushpins that hold the cover in place. I also want to have an idea of what is involved in replacing the cold control. It's also been suggested that the unit could be low on refrigerant, but this problem has been going on for five or so years now and everything is still working, more or less.

Could this issue be something as simple as a flap on a tray under the evaporator (freezer) being in one position or another?  I had the same problem on my '52 Kelvinator and extending the flap to keep the freezer area colder fixed it.

thanks for the suggestion, but this is definitely a problem with defrost in the Tru-Zone cold plate in the refrigerator.

Frosted-Iced Up Cold Plate

There are many variables here and with out seeing the ref it is hard to tell the reason.

 

Assuming the ref is keeping good temperatures and not running all the time you may need to add a low wattage heater to the back of the cold plate, something in the 10-20 watt range, wire it in across the thermostat so it is only on when the compressor is off.

 

Also be sure the thermostat capillary is clamped to the cold plate, if it is loose it may cause the problem you are having.

Thanks for this reply which gives me something to consider. I have discovered a small thermostat at the bottom of the cold plate, and it seems to be helping to try to synchronize the two. The hidden thermostat was on the coldest setting, so I am slowly dialing it back. I wish someone had an actual repair manual for this this year or close so that I could see how things are set. Freezer seems to be working normally. Thanks! Rex
