1955 Kenmore Washer

Today I went to replace the short hose on the discharge section of the pump---only to discover that the longer and wider hose running from the sump on the outer tub to the pump was already leaking. When I went to look at it a little closer, it broke off in my hand. Looks to me like I will have to remove inner tub to replace it. Anyone been there done that? Any light you can shed on the subject will be greatly appreciated. -Steve

Yes you do have to romove the outet tub. The flange of the hose is between the base and the outer tub. If the hose is NLA you might want to consider using a later model assembly with the grommet and pin catcher with the short hose going to the pump. To remove outer tub, remove top ring, agitator, inner tub. (a spanner wrench is nice but not totally necessary) and remove the four screws from the bottom of the tub. Twist and pull the outer tub out. Robert has documented much of this in his 1958 Lady Kenmore restoration. I would suspect that the pressure switch hose is also suspect. Robert had to replace the one on his 55 because of hose rot. I think he bought the last one from Sundberg, so finding one may be tough.

Thank you for the advise! I did not consider that I would have to remove the outer tub as well! That "scared my mule". I think I will wait untill Steve 1-18 comes to visit to tackle that problem so I will have someone more expierenced at these things to help. I will amuse someone at both Sears and Fox Appliance Parts today by trying to get the original parts! At least the part that broke off has the part number on it. I will keep you posted. -Steve

outer tub removal

While you're in there you might want to replace the outer tub to agitator post seal, too.
