1957 Westinghouse laundromat help needed

Hi all

I need some advice on fixing my washer. Having trouble with the speed changer or transmission, it's leaking oil out the bottom, we're the shift leaver comes out. If I put the right amount of oil in it leakes out some after a use, and leakes the rest out over night. Can a seal be replaced. It hasent been used in over 40 years. Had to replace most all the hoses do to dry rotten. I would love to get this working good agen.

WOW! What a beautiful machine. Love the puppy potty pad under the transmission. What's the story of this machine? It does not look like it got much use.

Please post some pics of inside the unit...the suspended tub has to be a specific degree... otherwise the unit will leak....also, what is the correct amount and where did u get the information from? What weight oil did u use ?

Took the back apart. The rubber boot sleeve has turned hard as a rock. It fell apart when I touched it. The pin that pushes it in to high speed has a bit of play in it. Hope this can be fixed, I will try to make a new boot.

I've had some that were a bit leaky as well, but not enough to make it concerning. Unfortunately like you said it looks like you'll need to retrofit and attach some kind of rubber boot onto the push shaft and shaft bearing. You'll probably have to seal it to both ends using clamps and possibly silicone. Something like this...

Help me out here.  Confused about when W'house went from the gearbox to the sheave for spin speed.  Quick, go to the POD page and tell me what year that pair is.  The one matching those that we got prior to moving in 1957 had the sheave.  The double door (inner glass/outer metal very early 50s) before that had the gearbox. 

 

I presumed after they made the change that they never went back.  But if the one pictured in OP is 1957, I must be mistaken.

 

Both arrangements had their weaknesses and both failed in time.  The gearbox was replaced when I was 9yo.  I rebuilt the sheave drive when I was 14yo, without instructions or supervision.  At no time in my electromechanical career, would I have undertaken to rebuild the gearbox.  As both performed (roughly) the same function and the sheave was much easier to maintain AND much cheaper to produce than the gearbox, I would have thought once the change was made it would have been permanent.  So what DID happen?

Production and design changes were kinda common- it was usually indicated on the model number by adding a letter just after it. I have an L100-M, which has three belts and the slider pulley. I discovered this was used as early as 1953-54 models, but it seemed available only on BOL models, one that I'd love to find, an LS7....at least that's what I found on the film I have.. And which slider pulley worked best, one with a straight slot, or a curved slot? I also have an L102K...wonder what they changed on that?

I have a 1959 square window and that has the three belt system.It was my understanding that system was introduced on the 1957 spacemates. I would like to see more pics of the 57 square window and hear the whole story of where it came from and why it looks so good.That is probably the best one in existence.How is the door boot?Did the machine run when you got it?

I think i have it fixed. have to put oil in it tonight and try it out. fingers crossed.

I got the 1957 washer in Springfield MA 2 weeks ago. it was posted in the shoppers square, it came with a non matching 1955 deluxe dryer. I was told that they came with the house the owner bought in 2005 they were in the basement still hooked up. the prev ice owner built a laundry room upstairs in the early 1960's and never used the Westinghouse set after that. the door boot turned to dust, most all the hoses were bad. when i got the washer home I plugged it in and it ran. the pump was stuck, but freed up easy. timer works but needs a little adjustment, as the 2ed rinse wont let the water in unless i juggle the knob and the high speed solenoid seems to stay on after the washer turns off, for one min then it goes off when the timer turns to off. for now i took the door boot off my 1954 LB6M washer as that one needs drum bearings.

ps.

it was very dirty and had some light rust spots. I did a bit of scrobbing on it to got it looking better. has a few paint chips.

if anyone has a matching dryer i would have interest in getting one.
