1958 Frigidaire Dryer Help

So the 1958 Frigidaire Dryer I purchased from Kevin a little over a year ago, is finally getting a once over. I took it all apart and cleaned all the lint out of it. I also checked all the switches and found one that wasn't working(which would be why it wouldn't work). After a little playing around with it and some cleaning, I was able to get it to work again. Anyways the thermostat in it is shot. Someone had bypassed it at one point and just used a toggle switch to turn the heat on or off. I need some assistance in locating a replacement thermostat. The part number on it are badly worn off and is hard to make out what it says. I know a couple people in the club have a 1958 Frigidaire dryer. Also one of the side panels is missing it's instulation. What would be the best type to use? Anyways here is a picture of the dryer next to the 57 Lady Kenmore dryer. Any help would be appreciated.

Robert also has that dryer and I'm sure he could get you a part number.  I don't know if this was a rather standard Robertshaw or Wilcolator thermostat from the period or if it was something very specific to the filtrator dryers.

 

Another option that might be a "work around" would be to install an industrial thermostat with a remote sensing bulb and place the actual thermostat box on the back of the panel.

The later replacement PN for the thermostat was 6593603 for the DCI-58 dryers. It may be tough to find. If so, Mark's suggestion isn't a bad idea if you're in a pinch.

UPDATE - the original PN for the thermostat was 6560654, however the thermo-probe (diastat) is listed as a separate item, PN 5874622. I'd figure you'd have better luck searching for the 6593603 kit.

Interestingly enough, the first Google hit for the kit PN comes up with a Robertshaw number 5300-621 SP-189-36.

DCI-58 Dryer Thermostat

Hi Justin, I assume that you are talking about the adjustable thermostat, or are you talking about the fixed safety thermostat?, let me know I might have the one you need. Which side is missing insulation? the right side looking at the machine does not have as much insulation as the left side, if you need to add insulation use fiberglass insulation or something similar that can not burn or melt.

"Someone bypassed and simply toggled the heat on or off". From the vids i have seen of the filtrators running that is one scary thought. Countryford, I am glad you are fixing it correctly. You are all set up to run one of Kevin's filtrator towel tests for us. I wish you the best of luck with your filtrator. Both of your machines in the pic are minty. alr

ALR: I'm looking forward to finishing it. I can't go too much further right now, unless I want to take it back apart when I get the correct parts. After I am done with this dryer I'm going to start on the 57 Lady Kenmore(the one on the left in that pic). I did the 1954 Frigidaire dryer first. I'm mainly, just tearing them apart and cleaning the 50+ years worth of lint and junk out of them and replacing any parts that are necessary.

 

The TV is a Philco from 1956. It is in my bedroom and does get used every now and then.

John L (combo52) I want to thank you for mailing me those thermostat parts. I was able to make one out of them. I bench tested it, and it works. I will be installing it later this week. Will post once I get it completed.

The dryer is all put back together. Got it working. One minor issue is a thumping when the drum spins. I'm guessing it is the bearing. Does anyone have the part number for the bearing and ring? Also is it a special tool to remove the old bearing?

Thumping 58 Frigidaire DCI-58 Dryer

Hi Justin, there are two rollers that support the front of the dryer drum on this dryer, you access them by removing the whole rectangular panel behind the loading door, there are 6 or 8 Phillips head screws that hold the panel in place. The rollers are attached to the back of this panel, and they can be dissembled cleaned and lubricated with a few drops of light oil, if you find that one of these rollers is badly flat-spotted left me know as I probably still have some good used ones around.

John's right on the money.  In the past, when I've serviced Filtrators, I've taken apart the front rollers and cleaned them as John mentions in his post. 

 

If you're still experiencing issues after cleaning them, and you've concluded that the rollers are fine, the rear bearing is a standard size bearing that you can replace.  Grainger PN for the bearing is a 1L046 (sealed version).  One way to check the rear bearing is to take the belt off the drum pulley, pull the front roller assembly, and then lift the drum to center it and turn it back and forth.  It should spin smoothly.  If you feel resistance, or hear the bearing scraping, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace it.

Justin, do you remember what my Speed Queen washer sounded like when it was spinning?   Sort of a growling / roaring.   Does the dryer sound some what like that or is it more of a thump-thump-thump-thump-thump?   If thumping it's more than likely the rollers, of a growling/roaring, it's the bearing.

It is more of a thump-thump noise. I had the front rollers off, when I took apart the whole unit, but I may need to lubricate them. I'll double check it when I get a chance. I don't remember seeing any flat spots on them.

A little update on these two dryers. John LeFever is visiting and with his help, we determined that the Frigidaire dryer's timer is bad and wasn't sending power to the heating element. We bypassed the dial and one of the elements started working, the other one is bad. So I need a timer dial and a heating element for it.
The 57 Kenmore dryer works, but it also needs a new heating element.
