Hi Rick! I am so confused. I have never seen the Maytag lid like that one since it's solid. It looks like it wouold be a lid with mercury switches but isn't! Is the only thing in that lid the tub light? Please enlighten me on this. Mark

Maytag lid
Hi Mark, The lid has two mercury switches in it. One is now bypassed (the lid switch that stops everything) The other mercury switch turns on the tub light that is inside the lid when the lid is lifted.
This machine has a mechanical out of balance system. A tab on the tub ring simply pushes the start switch (on the timer,from under the top) to the off postition.
The machine has the "old school" quality to it,although the motor mounting system transmits more noise than the later models.(and I really don't mind that) They dryer is whisper quiet. I never thought I would love a Maytag as I do these!
Now I just need to find a vintage Frigidaire!
