1959 Hotpoint Supermatic Range

Just when I was thinking we live in a vintage appliance desert, something fun pops up. I saw this range on CL last week and contacted the seller. She told me the story of the range, it had been in her family her entire life and since 1975, used in the basement as a second oven and for making popcorn. She and her partner are remodeling her parent's home for themselves and don't want the range in the new plans so she tried to sell it at the estate sale when clearing out the house. I wish all the ranges I've dragged home over the years were this clean and functional. Every feature on the range seems to work perfectly, except the panel lamp which needs a new ballast. The broiler/drip pan, racks and rotisserie parts were all included, even the original burner bowls.

Beautiful.  Droool.  What's the rota-grill?  the oven temp and bake/off/broil knobs remind me an awful lot of similar knobs on the WI58 UltraWash Unimatic water temp knobs.

Wow!  That is one impressive control tower!

 

My only quibble is the location of the Supermatic knob in relation to the burner it operates.  Maybe it only appears closer than it actually is?

That is one beautifully cared for Hotpoint stove. You sure hit the jackpot! I love the way they identified the burners on the control panel with the colored centers on the burners corresponding to the color of the pushbutton controls.

I notice that there are only three shelf positions in the oven, I don’t recall seeing less than four before, but that shouldn’t make too much difference anyway.

It’s always great to see something vintage, that has been preserved so well go to a home where it will be appreciated and used.

one of HP's best!...

it's rare to see all the color-keyed ceramic burner centers in such good condition, the red ones especially seem to deteriorate in most HPs that I've seen. Nice find!

Was the Supermatic feature the same as GE's Sensi-Temp?  It seems like it is.

Wow, Hotpoint went all out on their range designs in the late 50's. What a stunning example!

Any long term plans? Wet bar/kitchenette in the basement?

I put a bulb and starter in so the lamp is working as it should now, it really is a pretty range.

Bob, the Rota-Grill is the rotisserie. Luckily, the rack, rod and hooks came with the range but I've not tried it out. I've not had a range with the rotisserie so it should be a fun experiment - hopefully not too messy. The deep well drip/broiler pan also came with it.

I wondered about that Supermatic element switch being hidden by the pan, I'll have to try it out with a stock pot. I have a sneaking suspicion you're probably right, though.
