It's overpriced -- considering it's not in proper working order, and too new for the swing-out shelves.

 

Probably the last year GE offered turquoise, or close to it.

Ralph, that's either a '64 or '65 model, and some of them did have swing-out shelves. While Pink and Woodtone Brown were last offered in '65, Turquoise was available in '66, along with new Avocado.

Tom, I was thinking 1966 was as new as this fridge could possibly be. 

 

I didn't realize that GE was producing machines with and without the swinging shelves at the same time.  I thought that by 1965, pull-out shelving was all they offered.  Good to know.

I think it's a 1964

Looking back, 1964 was the last year that the magnets on the door were a pair of discs.  1965 and 1966 both used a rectangular magnetic plate on the door.  There was a 1964 bottom-mount with 1 fixed and 2 sliding shelves, with 2 crisper drawers.  And the 1964 handle matches this one.

Does it sound right that the frig would be cooling and the freezer would not?

 

I'm not an expert in refrigerators but I have fixed some.  Typically, I've found that if one section doesn't cool, then no sections cool but that's with newer models that have a fan to distribute the air.  This however, looks like there are two distinct sections and there is no air movement between the top and bottom.

 

It's about 2 hours away.  I was thinking of going to look at it.

Is there new replacement gaskets available that would have magnets in the stripping?

 

Without the magnets, theres limited reason for the stripping to seal.

 

Remember, in the 70s when they would do those "energy saving" commercials and they'd talk about appliances wasting electricity?  They would literally take a dollar bill and slide it in the closed door to illustrate how air would leak out.

The handle was redesigned for the '66 models, and used through '67. The bottom grille was also restyled at that time. The woodgrain finish handle was introduced for '68, and it was used for a number of years.
