1961 NORGE EPHEMERA

This machine is a Dispensomat unlike any I've seen here. The 8 fabric choices are listed top to bottom in one list in really pretty color codes; it screams Custom Imperial Frigidaire as soon as the booklet pops open--only more colorful. It is interesting and striking. Even the next to TOL is eye-catching.

But as with every Ephemera, it always provokes a question, this time regarding rinsing, Here's how the doctrine reads:

"FRESH WATER SUPER RINSE -- Combines most effective rinsing methods known to ensure detergent and soil removal:

a Spray Rinse at the end of the wash spin, A Surface Overflow Rinse, an Agitated Overflow Rinse, an Agitated Deep Wave Rinse, a final Spray Rinse."

We've seen most of this before, even the SOR in the Kelvinator, but what is the difference between an AOR and an ADWR?

Spoiler alert: When I went back for a second read, something elsewhere in the text suggested by inference what the Agitated Deep Wave Rinse may be. So I was really perplexed, but now I know the answer. Before that, I wanted to ask the Norgemen if they knew what this rinse was.

My Aunt Had One

My Aunt had what I now realize was the AW-G-244 model. I remember how amused she was that I wondered why the fill flume didn't spout water into the little beige filter pan in the same way that Mom's 1960 Filter-Flo gushed water into it's bigger green filter pan when the machine was washing. Her Norge sounded just like Robert's 1956 model.

BTW, my Aunt still had her machine in 1985, making it 24 years old. Her husband was a macho 'Railroad Man' but also had a soft side. He didn't make fun of his little nephew who liked his washer. He simply told me what a helluva machine that Norge washer was!!!

Those were the days!!! Mom had a solid-tub Filter-Flo, one Aunt had the Norge, and the other Aunt had a Frigidaire washer with this beautiful agitator that had a green cap with yellow and pink rings that went up and down instead of wig-wagging!!!

What fun, Larry.

You can see your Aunt's pink, green, and yellow agitator in my wallpaper above the post--the quintessential Frigidaire icon. How we love it! The railroad uncle sounds like a gem. It was always so good when someone in our childhood understood, and always a nice surprise to hear who it was.

 

Can you remember any circulation at all, even if not as dramatic as the GE's?

I'm sad, sounds so fun. Grew up with a single Maytag, only knew one washer. Had to trick it to watch.

My Aunt Had One II

I never did figure out the Burpalation on my Aunts's Norge. I do remember the washer rather dramatically swishing the clothes around in the spreckled tub during the wash cycle. My Aunt did use the filter pan as a detergent dispenser as well. The washer did a superb job of cleaning. I can still remember it from fifty years ago. My Aunt also had a matching dryer.

Jason, I'm sad for you too. For many of us here, half the fun is recovering and using the machines of our youth.

 

Larry, I was surprised to see that this version of Norge did recirculate. Your memory confirms what the doctrine states which I'll be getting to later on--it was fascinating.

 

Bob, you're right: the time/temp/speed chart for the 8 programs is missing. I'll ask the Wizard of Awg about it.

 

Robert, it is really star-studded, isn't it!

I love that long list. Odd that we haven't found one. I wonder of it is more or less rare than the Apex BB.

You guys are right about it saying:

TOUCH ' N' WASH PUSHBUTTON CONTROLS- Color
coded and numbered 1 to 8, automatically provide correct
wash and rinse water temperatures, correct wash and spin
speed for proper laundering of fabrics as shown in FABRIC
FORMULA WASHING GUIDE illustrated below. This
same guide is permanently fired into underside of porcelain lid.

I can't find anything either and I double checked the originals. I wonder if they meant to put it in but ran out of room and then didn't proofread their copy very well?

I was so ecstatic over all the surprizes that I never noticed till Bob mentioned it.

 

Example: Some models have a separate switch on the console, just like an illumination button, for Wash N' Wear: it makes the machine cooldown through an overflow at the end of the wash. So you can meditate: To overflow or not to overflow, ah....that is the question. Made me give the Frigi's a little scowl

because they can't do this without in-cycle intervention.
