Then they built the garage

And I started feeling better about the whole project.

I added the iron fence and the street lights in the Spring

So the property looked kind of ugly all Winter. I was very busy that Spring. So was the City of Fort Wayne. They raise my taxes three times that year after the improvements....

Anyway I came up with the plan for the landscaping myself. There were times I thought it was not going to have the look I wanted. It wooked out really well in the end,and I have a LOT less grass to mow to boot!
I love to decorate it for Christmas.

Great House, Great Yard, Great Car

RickR you are da man!

Regarding that car; last time I was in someting that large which had a motor we were on a body of water! *LOL*
Just adore that lipstick red color. Kind of car which makes a girl say hmmm, how would I look riding in/getting out of that!
Of course being a good girl, would notice the back seat was almost as large as a front parlor sofa, therefore would have to watch my step around you. *LOL*!!!

Must say again, that is one nice piece of property you have there Rick! Just love old big houses. Around here developers are tearing them down as fast as they can (they really want the huge lot), so they can build townhouses.

Just love a house with a front porch! Like to sit outside and keep track of what goes on! Probally will turn into Mrs. Harper as I get older. Sitting outside yelling "Hey you kids, get that dog off my lawn. You little heathens!" *LOL*

Again job well done all the way around. You seem not to do things half way. Obviously you were raised right!

Great pics of the development

Raising your taxes? They should have lowered them for the neighborhood improvement. I know many cities have Heritage programs that either do that or allow you to deduct most or all the cost of restoring a heritage home back to its original look. Some even give you a small plaque stating such that is affixed usually by the front door outside. I think some of the conditions though are once accepted the house can never again be "modernized" architecturally on the exterior but has to remain authentic to its period look.

A sense of belonging

Thank you for such kind comments about the old family home. The roots here run deep for me,and that is one reason I stay in the Midwest. I am in love with this property.
I have a few really early pictures of the property, taken after the house was moved here in the early 1930's,and also a few from the 1940's. I will post them if anyone might be interested.

WOW--that '61 olds is a fine car!! IMHO, the taillights resemble the Ford Falcon, and to a lesser extent the late-50's Fairlane.

I'd like to see your house in its "earlier years"--didn't realize it was moved onto your property as late as the 1930's!! Thought it was done much earlier in its life!

Post away Rick, I enjoy looking at the pictures. What is the story behind the house being moved to that site? I'll take a guess, the house originally sat on some property that was expropriated by the city in order to build some new edifice or road.

House moving story

I've wondered about the story behind the move, also. An 1887 house even in 1930 could easily be considered to be "just an old house" and not worth moving anywhere. Many people would've just let it be torn down and built a totally new "modern" house on the new property. So the idea that somebody in the family thought it was worth saving at the time is intriguing. Possibly enough profit was realized from the sale of the original site to fund the move?

I remember our neighbor's '61 88

that speedometer has colors displayed like a contnuous horizontal bar graph, as you accelerate, no? It starts off with green and you gain speed changes then to (?). I was only 7 or 8 at the time but I remember my neighbor driving it and she took the car up to about 70 mph and I think the color at that speed was a purple??? I would love to know, thank you :)

Olds Speedometer

Hi Stainfighter,I just got home from the convention(what a blast that was!!). It was a 1452 mile round trip for me. I drove, but not this car.

The speedo has a colored bar that travels straight across the numbers. It is green from zero to 35 mph, then changes to orange at 35 mph,at 65 mph it changes to bright red.At 120 mph it changes to silver. (I found that out in the 1980's) The colors are in a spiral on a drum. The drum is about the size of an empty paper towel roll. The speedo is operated via a cable from the transmition. Instead of a needle,Oldsmobile used a drum speedometer from 1959 until 1962. They are kewl, but harder to read at a glance.

Drum roll speedo's

Which car was it that had the other revolving drum speedo, the Riviera or the Toronado in the mid 60's ? The drum had the mph printed on it as it turned behind the glass. with the marker line on it.

For Veg... Speedo

Who emailed me yesterday with this comment,"Hey Mr. Boy Scout! I hear you wouldn't go drinking with Bethann. Too busy leading a life of purity and goodness?"

Sorry Veg,the only pixs I have are from 1990. This type of "speedo" has been "out" for quite a while in the USA....

I am off to the gym, instead of the bar...However I expect to see your "speedo shot" on here by the time I get back at 9:30 PM And if it is not,you are a big SISSY! LOL!!

That is one hot Boy Scout!

Isn't he dreamy? Sorry, girls--he bats for our team.

Rick, dear--first of all, I AM a big sissy! Sissyhood notwithstanding, I am actually prohibited from wearing a speedo by Maryland statute. Wouldn't want to break the law, you know; therefore, I don't own one.

For which the rest of the world should be grateful.

Bethann, you hit it on the head: Ho. Ly. Crap! When that little number popped up on my screen... Well, let's just say I'm glad I have a lot of clean laundry. And Spray 'n Wash.

That was a lovely gift, Ricky. I will be printing it out and sleeping with it under my pillow.

Sigh...

veg who...oops, there it goes again!

It's actually illegal for a man to wear brief style swim trunks in Maryland Veg-matic??? Seems sort of lop-sided law, because I have seen many women wearing much less than that on Maryland beaches! That's good to know since I vist Maryland quite often.

I certainly don't have anything against wearing speedo swim trunks, especially since I keep myself in shape...although not quite as good as you have RickR! I got used to wearing them when I was on the college swim team. I'm not gay, but I am defintely impressed by your nice body (either in an automobile body, in the case of that cool Olds, or a human body, male or female!) because I know how much hard work is involved in keeping in shape. You ain't doing too bad when you can even impress the straight guys!!!

Still, I've had the gal's I've dated either love me to wear my speedos or hate it... there is no middle ground with females! You gotta have a body to wear one though... unfortunatly, you gotta give'em up if one gets old and ends up with a potbelly!

Thanks!Remember the picture is 15 years old. I was 35 when that picture was taken in 1990.I am 50 now. It is hard work to keep in shape,at any age,and it keeps getting rougher as you grow older. What is a battle in your thirty's becomes an all out war in your fifties!LOL!Still it is worth the extra effort too me. I've never had a weight problem,I was always a skinny guy,and still am. The advantage of being thin is that you look more "cut"and muscular. But you never have the mass or strength of the really big guys. You have to work with what you got,and live with it.I wouldn't want to see most big guys in a speedo at any age. I can still do more pushups than any of the 20 and 30 year olds at work, and can beat most of them at arm wrestling! That is really fun! HA!

I think Veg is kidding about speedos being against the law in MD. He is rather shy,and I was giving him a rough time for teasing me about not going out drinking with Beth Ann during the convention. It was so hot in Omaha, all I wanted was cold water anyway!

This pix was taken last Summer at our company picnic.

Veg you are a sweetheart!

David I am available! Let me know if you ever get a divorce! LOL!!

I didn't see anything on CNN about it...

but Canada finally passed legislation two days ago legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide. Only the 3rd country after Holland and Belgium so far..one difference I'm told is that anyone can get married in Canada whereas in you have to be Dutch or Belgium citizen over there.

Hi Pete!

As of today Gay's may get married in Spain too! The Catholic church is trying their best to have that changed though...

Minor clarification

Just to be clear about it, it is not illegal to wear a speedo in Maryland. It is illegal for me to wear one.
I'd recite the statute from the Maryland Annotated Code, but, well, no sense making my shame public. Or more so.

As for keeping myself in shape, well, I do. It's sort of a cross between a pear and a potato.

And our Rick's single! Well, there's one of the biggest mysteries of mankind!

veg, who's having the picture blown up to poster...dang! there it goes again!
