1963 Coldspot Freezer Fan replacement Howard Ind. Loyd Scruggs

Anyone aware of a direct replacement (I prefer N.O.S./Original for no-surprises fitment) for the unit described and photographed below?

My fridge is 1963 Coldspot Spacemaker 14,
Freezer Fan is somewhat weak--getting a frequent harsh squeal as well which has me thinking the bearing finally has given after 53 years. I'm not completely sure if this is a big contributor to the frost over I have discovered yesterday.

Fridge has been running 3 months--fridge box is ALWAYS consistent at 37-40 degrees, Freezer tends to hang in the low teens, sometimes down to 8 degrees (ran consistently at about -5 for the first couple months).
I shut the unit down last night to de-ice--one pic shows the frost-over--at least it's uniform/even! I Let it all melt on its own and everything drained nicely down into the pan.

Defrost timer is working, in fact the heater's running on the unit right now and the front mullion between fridge/freezer is warm. Can't yet tell if any heat is getting to the evaporator or not... Door gaskets are all good, no leaks.

A little stumped, but it is only a drinks fridge so no big deal to me if I have to defrost manually every few months.

Thoughts/input appreciated--especially regarding a proper direct swap fan replacement. Thanks, all!

It looks like the evaporator defrost heater isn't working, and ice build-up could be impeding the fan.

 

Can you click the defrost timer on and check to see if the evaporator heater (with cover off as in your freezer pictures) and floor heater (under the floor between evaporator and the drain) are getting warm?

 

I don't think the fan would be as difficult to find as the evaporator and/or floor heaters.  There used to be a retrofit available for the floor heater.  Maybe it's just a loose wire, or the timer itself failing to trigger the heaters.  I think the connections are under the molding at the front of the freezer.

I'm pretty sure right now that the evap heater isn't doing its thing. It's the reason I left the cover off last nite. The floor temp…it's hard to tell, somewhat warmish but nowhere near as obviously warm as the upper mullion panel. I think I'm going to investigate this further at a later date when I can pull the fridge out and have a really good look-over. The mood I'm in today dictates "no more projects". SO sore and cramped up from being down on the floor inside the freezer most of the night…!

After taking a second look, and based on your report, I think the floor heater might be OK.  If it wasn't, there'd be a much thicker build-up of ice -- like a glacier -- at the bottom of the evaporator.  That's how it looked on the two Coldspots I dealt with that had bad floor heaters.  If anything, on your evaporator it looks like the opposite is happening.

 

If I'm right, then the timer can probably be eliminated as the cause.  If it's triggering the floor heater (and the floor heater only gets warm enough to keep the melted condensate moving toward the drain), then it's either a bad connection to the evaporator heater or the heater itself.  I hope it's the former, and yeah, I can relate to needing to take some time off from something like this!

Had the same fridge for many, many years.  I replaced the defrost timer once I believe, and the defrost heater once, man was that a pain - in many ways.  It finally died about 8 years ago, was very heavy to haul out of the basement.  I always liked it, easy to get stuff in and out of, decent size, 14 cu. ft seems small today with 30+cu ft  units, but growing up it held all our family needed.

fan mentioned above. I'd like an identical replacement vs. anything else. Anyone have one? May wind up cracking open my old SubZero parts fridge and see if that fan might fit the coldspot…!

Do you have a model # of the refrig...begins with 106. I do have some older evaporator fan motors new in box. let me know. I LOVED my twindor bottom freezer Coldpot. Spacemaster interior with icemaker. Lasted 33 years!!!

Part # is 482468. It is a kit with instructions. It does list motor # 517472 to replace with this kit. The kit comes with enclosed motor, mounting plate, gasket, spacers, and screws. This is a OEM Whirlpool kit.
