1963 Westinghouse DBD-30 dryer in MINT AQUA!

Hello all, I negotiated with the owners and picked up this 1963 Westinghouse DBD-30 dryer in mint aqua. She's got a bit of rust from being in a basement, which I suspect may have flooded at some point, for the last 61 years.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice dealing with machines that were water damaged, perhaps a parts machine (or motor, element, knob, etc.) OR dream of dreams, the matching washer in any color?

I'll see If I can get you a photo, I just dropped it off in my storage unit a little while ago.

Here's a section from the owners manual I just so happened to gave in my ephemera. It shows the knob, if anyone has one in their parts stash they'd like to sell.

During the age of 8th grade through high school I worked for the choir director at church in a musician as well as office/admin capacity. Her family acquired at a garage sale a 1961-1962 version of this dryer. It was a great dryer. The auto dry cycle had a "dot" on the control panel that matched the timer knob and I quickly figured out that was the perfect setting for most auto dry loads. I loved sitting at the desk working and gazing over at the dryer as the clothes tumbled displayed through the glass in the door.

This was a pretty dryer, unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it was stored in the best of conditions. If you wanted to really use it, you would need a new motor blower thermostats the heater. These dryers performed. Well if the vent was short, but they weren’t very durable.

I honestly didn’t think you’d be interested so I didn’t post the link, but sounds like you found it. Idaho always seems to have good stuff - probably due to a host of social and geopolital reasons. It’s also just far enough that I’d reallllllyyyyyyyyy need something bad to drive there but it’s close enough for me to consider haha. It’s been posted for at least a month, maybe two or more. What a beautiful machine.

 

What is the surface of that dryer drum? Porcelain enamel? Baked Acrylic? Paint?

 

Are there people out their somewhere who can resurface real porcelain enamel?

I can't say for sure, but I think the '63 model we had was a painted finish. Unless porcelain enamel was chipped or otherwise damaged, it wouldn't rust like that.

My observation from age 10 was their dryer drums were cheaply coated. And didn't hold up well to heavy use or dealing with stuff like sneakers, ...

I may break down and get that NY dryer, we'll see. I'd prefer to hold out for a 61-63 that has the same knob as I need one for this thing. However, we'll see how impatient I get and if I can get time to go up there.

Knowing Westinghouse they put the cheapest amount of paint/coating on everything. I still stand by they were the among the most beautiful machines built in this era, imo, but the construction quality is a bit lacking.
