1964 Turquoise Kenmore 70 Set

Thanks again to Kenny for posting this set. I’ve included the link to where this venture started. This may not be an aesthetically matched set but they were purchased by the same person from Sears in the fall of 1964. The dryer is a 1963 model that was built in 1964. They are both in great condition for their age. I ran the washer through a couple of loads yesterday and it made it through 2 cycles but will need a mechanical rebuild. I was told from the person I purchased them from that they came from an estate sale and that they haven’t been tested so it’s been a while since they were in operation. Surprisingly the washer didn’t leak a drop of water. I successfully suds locked it on the first spin though. Surprise surprise. I didn’t have time to check the dryer yet. Cosmetically they look great for their age. They were bought on credit from Sears in the Texas pan handle in October 1964 so happy 60th birthday. Here are some pictures although I haven’t done any cleaning on them yet.

Mother had the 1963 version of the 70 Series washer, in white, so it matched this dryer.  I always thought that was a really classy console.  Mother would have purchased hers in the spring of 1964, it was probably on sale at Sears, and that would have been the deal clencher.  But I do not remember hers having a manual lint filter, seems like hers had the self-cleaning type of lint filter.

My oldest sister dated a guy in mid 1960s whose parents lived in a housee near Bryan Beach. They had matching washer to the dryer and it had a self-cleaning filter along with the corresponding panel "idiot" light indicating the filter was working. They also had a very similar dryer to the washer in the thread.

$580 in 1964 = $6,823 in 2024 dollars, ouch..

On the other hand, considering they're still going 60 years later I'd say they got a bargain.

These are neat machines. Got to love the fact that they have a documented history! Surely they landed in a proper, comfortable home!

Bob and Lawrence- I can help with the mystery on the lint filter in the 63 model. Back in the early 90s when I was in the middle of my rebuilding and resale frenzy, I ran across a pristine 1962 KM 70, and was shocked to open the lid and find that it had a self cleaning filter. The 62s I had always seen had manual filters .

Later, after finding AW.org, I did a lot of research about that odd 1962 model. I found out that not only was there a 62 70 series with an SC filter, there was a 61 also. The primary 63 however was indeed self cleaning. The 64 reverted back to its roots, and also deleted the scrubber cap.

I failed to take the 62 home that night that I saw it at the appliance rebuilder, but when I went back the next day it had been loaded in a recycle bin and hauled away. Still sorry I missed it to this day.

Wow, sales slips to go with this great set to document when these beauties were purchased. One point of interest is that from the cycle dial it appears to be a suds saver, yet the model number reads 110.6404******. I haven't really thought too much lately about the nomenclature involved with these model numbers, but if memory serves, a suds saver model would read 110.6405****, as 5 would be an indicator of this feature. Is this washer a suds saver?

Good information thanks Gordon. I had wondered too why they had a self-cleaning lint filter on the 63 through 5 70 series Kenmore, but they also had the 64 model with the manual filter when we moved here the neighbor across the street bought the Kenmore With the manual filter, she kept it for many years.

My aunt Margret in Chevy Chase, Maryland bought the 65 Kenmore 70 with sub saver in turquoise, I asked why she got turquoise just to have the machine in the basement and she said it was a no charge option so that sold her. It certainly was a nice bright Machine otherwise drab basement.

Hi Melvin, it looks like the Suds saver valve is missing from your Kenmore washer. Do you think someone removed it?

Thanks everyone for all of the positive comments! These machines really are nice. James you are correct in the nomenclature that a sudsaver would have a 5 instead of 4 in the model number. This machine does have a suds return spot that is live on the timer but the washer wasn’t a sudsaver from the factory. I do have a 1963 70 series buried in the collection that has the marble style self cleaning lint filter with the filtering light on the control panel.

Congratulations, Melvin. Honestly, I know there are plenty of beautiful sets out in the world of collectors and enthusiasts. I'm always discovering, despite hanging around here at aw.org for several years plus. So besides the fact that these are so beautiful, and restorable, will these be a primary or one of a few in your collection? Very cool. Hope they bring you years of fun.

Reply 15: I’ll have to admit I never use the w-n-w cycle so I haven’t kept up with the sequences over the years.

Phil it’s always good to hear from you. At some point they will be rebuilt to be bulletproof for many years but they probably won’t be daily drivers.

Looks like the motor has been replaced on the washer-I think original would have been a round GE or a black round Emerson.The square GE motors came out around 1967-68 i think and vary a lot on how well and how long they run The 72564 marking on the transmission might be mfg.date of the transmission
