1964 Waste King Dishwasher in Texas

I've been contacted by someone in San Antonio, TX who has a 1964 Waste King Dishwasher as well as a 50's Kenmore Ironer who would like to find good homes for.

I quote:

"The Dishwasher was installed brand-new in the house in 1964, and painted pink to match the kitchen tiles. It does still work, but needs a new thermostat, and maybe some POR-15 could seal up the rust and be able to handle the heat and detergent. I also have all of the original paperwork and manual for it. I don't know the story on the ironer, and also don't know if it works."

I have never seen a Waste King dishwasher that old.
So sad that there is so much rust.

I kinda like the idea of the space "loops" at the tip of the tines/prongs of the lower rack.

I suppose it ensures that water can get between the dishes!

Let's hope someone in the club gets these. The parts for the dishwasher ARE still available from Thermador! Mark (same dishwasher as the Thermador - without the stainless interior and the steam attachment for the heater element)

Toggle, no the timer dial doesn't have numerous cycles. Just one that's differentiated by the 3 cycle buttons. Ours only had the final rinse heat phase. It looks like this one may heat water before the wash. The timer dial cycles look exactly the same, but longer in duration, than our '59. The sequence is pre-wash, main wash, suds flush, rinse 1 and rinse 2, dry. Also the same detergent dispenser. The timer moved in 30 second increments.

This is a hybrid between our 1959 & 1968 Waste King. From the '59, it had the same basic control panel and door closing mechanism. I can't really describe it but it had something in the door latch that caught and made it difficult to open without pulling kinda hard. It also has almost pretty much the identical top rack.

From the 1968 perspective, the bottom rack with the loops over the tines. The dual level washing with the spray arm in the top fed by that metal pipe between the two wash arms. I called that an "H" on its side. Also added a "heat" light to the panel, something our's didn't have in 1959. Just the WKU logo with a little light behind it showed it was on.

I know of 2 Waste King's included in built houses on our block--we imported ours when we moved into the house and slung back the Tappan in the house to our old house. One of the two models was BOL and the other one was exactly like ours, but the kitchen appliances were in coral. Rather befitting a former beauty queen turned housewife married to lawyer.

I recall much newer WKU or Theramdors (wit SS interiors) had a STEAM cycle...

Would you or a kind stranger please tell me more....

Hi Toggle! The steamer attachment was a metal structure that was attached to the heating element (it had lot's of wrinkles and creases). Before the wash cycle started, the heater element came on and created a machine full of steam! On the steam cycle, the heater element stayed on throughout the cycle. I had one of the Thermador versions in the 80's. Best dishwasher that I ever owned!!! It washed beautifully, was really noisy, and looked great! It's only downfall was the center wash tower, even though of all the tower machines, it was the best. The tower never retracted back into the lower wash arm like the GE's and other similar versions. Since it was a rigid tower, you really couldn't block the tower from coming up. Just a great machine. Mark

Update!

(I know my ID say "Irving" but I am is S.A. currently.) The ironer was given to my grandpa by a cousin to fix, and he did. Grandma used it for sheets mostly. I saw one similar to it in an e-bay store for $1700 (good luck with all that) We're having an estate sale in two weeks, and the DW will be replaced after that, Let me know if you're interested.

I was wrong about the DW. I took the bottom panel off to unplug it, and it's pink on the inside too. I guess it was just the fridge and roaster Grandma used to have that were painted pink.

1968 Waste King Dishwasher

I remember my aunt remodeled her kitchen back in 1968. That '68 kitchen was an expensive up market redo. They replaced the gas stove with a Jennair Electric oven with the grill cook top option. And the dishwasher was I believe a stainless steel top line Waste King model. I remember that dishwasher was super noisy. As a matter of fact when in the basement under their kitchen it sounded like the inside of a Boeing 707 or 727 cabin. They were noisy back in the day. Any more information on the 1968 model? Anyone have pictures of a 1968 era Waste King dishwasher? What ever happened to Waste King? Do they still make dishwashers?
