1966 Frigidaire dishwasher

Greetings. New guy here. Found a 1966 Frigidaire DW-CIUK on CL, really good shape, and seriously considering. But ... press start and it runs momentarily, then stops. Thoughts? Also, there must be at least one thread about finding parts. Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.

Top of the line dw

Could the pause in the motor just be the usual pause while the machine is taking in water? Maybe someone closed the in line water valve?

Both, especially range are just gorgeous.

Push button

What if you held the button in? Does it continue to run? Have you tried different buttons? Try the "Cancel" button? Maybe the contacts in the push button have gotten rusty from not being used.

Beautiful 1966 FD Appliances

Always neat to find such lightly used appliances.

 

This range was the first FD range with a  Self-Cleaning Oven, and on top of the very complicated SC system this range also had a very complex Tender-Matic control to regulate the oven temperature when roasting meats.

 

It will blow your mind if you get this range and remove the back panel and see all the wiring and controls that made these work, It was easily the most complex range ever built except for the Micro-Thermal- SCing ranges.

 

The bad news is these ovens became very unreliable if they were used much.

 

The DW is also very interesting, it would be about the 2nd year of FDs newer design DW with the plastic coated tub.

 

These were pretty good performers that held a lot of dishes, the bad news was again durability, the pump was full of pot-metal parts the corroded quickly and the tubs tended to rust out pretty fast.

 

Both of these appliances would be great for a collector that was not going to use them as daily drivers.

Thanks, all. For the suggestions, as well as the bad news about these not being good choices as primary appliances. Unfortunate. Is there a thread with opinions for the "best" choices for daily use appliances?

I was amazed when I saw a video of the motor-driven thermostat move like something possessed when it lowered the heat all by itself. I had thought that it would use a bias heater like some dryers used. I wonder if the oven controls would last longer if you did not use the self-cleaning feature. I self clean ovens when I first find them, but after that I do not use the feature and just manually clean the few splatters as they happen.

Good choice - bad choice

You know, if you want to get these units for daily use for whatever reason, then get them and use them! They are stylish, have interesting features and reflect a build quality not always shown these days. And they are not the "me too" look of the monotone fake stainless steel on HGTV. What the hell, it's no more of a crap shoot than some of the short-lived appliances of today. I say, go for it!

So do you use/like your Coppertone, Goatfarmer? (We've got goats, too.)

I was wondering that, too, Tomturbomatic. We like to cook, and do, but tend to just use basic functions, and not self clean.

And good point, steved. I can't bear the thought of getting something "new and stainless".

i've got a 60's era frigidaire

that looks pretty much like your's inside, same racks and same spray tower in middle. i've had it 10 years and never done a thing to it, still works, doesn't leak.

i also have a box of parts for those frigidaires that i got from a member here a few years ago. and pump seals are available still, you can find them on ebay from time to time, motors also.

to me they were very well made machines, at least mine is.

Thanks, Ron. Good to be here. Picked up the stove and dishwasher yesterday. No rain, fortunately. Stove cleaned up beautifully. Plugged it in. Cooked Chicken Cacciatore. Worked like a champ. Fantastic. Now we'll have a look at the dishwasher.
