1966 GE Dishwasher

Well tonight I hosted a dinner party of 10 for my Grams 82nd birthday and while I was at it decided to get some pictures of her dishwasher. It is a TOL 1966 General Electric, it was installed when doing a new kitchen in their victorian home. Being General Electric dealers it was only natural they got the TOL model in the all new fashion color Avacado.

Here is the left side of the console, I love the script and that it infors you it is an Automatic dishwasher

Here is the right side of the console, it features Rinse-Glo, which I assume is the drying agent dispenser

most of the dishes were well rinsed, though the dessert plates still had a good bit of frosting on them

Overall this machine cleans well if the dishes are rinsed off or just lightly soiled, but after the dry cycle things are still left pretty wet

i'm a big dishwasher collector and i've always loved those g.e. mobile maids since i was a kid! i've got a few top load models that use the vertical pump/motor like the one in your thread here. i also have one front load model similiar to your grandmother's machine although mine is not top line. does not have the silver shower.

looking at your thread is giving me motivation to put mine back together and try it out! tore it down last year for a rebuild after i bought it. pic shown below.

If those glasses in the bottom rack did not break or chip, you lead a charmed life. A friend in ATL gave a party and one of his friends loaded the GE with all of the glasses, using the lower rack to increase the glass-holding capacity. Every glass on the lower rack was broken. I think WP also warns against loading glasses in the lower rack.

The glasses came out break and chip free, they are quite thick though.

The oly reason they are in the bottom rack is those Iced tea glasses were too tall to fit on the top shelf

I am always surprised when my experience can be so unlike another member whom I might admire.  I have always had good GE dishwasher experiences.  The issues most complain about are BOL models without a Tower Shower to rinse off the yibbles.  GE has made dishwashers that last for years, wash clean and hold a lot.  I am glad to see it still swooshing away and glad that you still find time to make Grandma feel so special.

Nice pics.. what brand/type of detergent were you using?

I was using Cascade gel, the bottle is a good 5-6 years old or so, have to shake it up before dispensing as it seperated some.

This machine only gets used when the family is over, so it only gets used maybe 2 times a year currently

Pretty old, maybe thats why it needs prerinsing etc. Probably would do a heckuva lot better with some fresh Quantum or Cascade all-in-one tabs do you think

wowsers. My family had one of these. It was White on the front instead of avacado but it was the exact type of machine. The family that had lived in the house Before us bought the machine in 1967, the receapt was still intact when we found it some many years back.

The dishwasher itself worked perfectly without problems until it suddenly stopped working on christmas eve 1998. Such a bad day to stop working. we did the dishes without the dishwasher.

i Think the reason it Went bad was that water had leaked into the motor compartment because some rusty spots in the bottom of the machine had started leaking away.

Anyway it was a cool thing to see such dishwasher again. I did searched for such dishwasher here on the forum and found it.

With a GE or Hotpoint back then was they were LOUD!!!!I thought they washed fine.

It's cool to see this thread, again.

There is a tendency to focus on one's own favorite design as the 'best' and to forget that others can be as good or even better.

My experiences with KA (pre-Whirlpool, I can't think of anything from that era of as poor quality, not even D&M) are so-so. They are too temperamental for my taste.

GE/Hotpoint of this era, on the other hand - they worked!

Love the rinse-aid dispenser. Just one tiny step away from fully automatic.

Heh Norgeway, you are quite right. Often when our dishwasher was on, my father often closed the door to the kitchen because the dishwasher was so loud. However up until the christmas eve of 1998 the dishwasher worked perfectly fine.

During the last week Before christmas my family noticed the machine leaked a Little water. But it was so little water so no one cared much about it.

One of the first things that fascinated me about our front loading GE dishwasher from 1965 was how the detergent cup would retract itself in when you turn the dial had tons of fun with that

Just Saying GE almost always had two rinses after the Main Wash.
