1967 Dutch catalogue

I have this catalogue in my collection. It's a 1967 farmer's catalogue, but they also sold products for the home. I took photos of the pages with washers (and a rare dryer) and dishwashers. Scanning them was too difficult because of the size and the weight of the catalogue.

For posting these Louis. I like the Zanker with the top controls. Do the twin tub looking machines operate in the same way as the AEG Turnamat or are they more like twin tubs we had in the UK?

Yes, all the twintubs and toploaders are like the AEG Turnamat, so all H-axis machines. The only agitator machine is the AEG Super Agitator Wasmachine.

BTW, the Siemens WK43 is a washer/dryer combo. Laundry was washed and rinsed in the washtub, spun out in the spinner and then put back into the washtub where it was tumble dried.

The Siemens sounds like a fun machine! I always thought the Turnamat was the best of both worlds. The convenience of an automatic with the fast spin of a twin tub.

It's really interesting to see the variety of machines available in the Netherlands in 1967, compared to the machines of the time in the U.K.

Did I miss it or did the description say nothing about venting or lack thereof?

Apologies if I missed it. I'm reading this through a German minor (from the 80's) and a semester of Old English not much more recent.

Thanks for the insight. I love catalogues. To me they provide an insight into the backdrop of everyday life.

Personally, I've always been intrigued by the lack of emphasis/interest in dryers in Europe, even in countries where the weather makes outside drying something of a problem.

I know drying closets were more common in Europe than in the US, but were they that ubiquitous?

In the US older boilers and furnaces produce a good bit of waste heat. This often made the basement an ideal place to dry clothes during the heating season.

It is indeed not a vented drying system but a water cooled condensation one.

There were more dryers available in the NL than the AEG dryer in this catalogue. This firm only sold a limited number of brands. For instance Miele is missing here, Miele always had around 20% market share here. But not many people had them yet, I guess the main reason was that electricity was expensive. We had neighbours with a Miele dryer, but most drying was done on the outside clothesline and under a drying porch. They had 9 children, so they accumulated lots of laundry. My mother dried outside or inside on a wooden clothesrack. Inside it stood in the laundryroom, there was room enough.

Good heavens Launderess, you have a good memory! That is indeed the same AEG Minerva dryer.

Another special appliance is the Siemens dishwasher in the very last picture. It is similar to the Constructa dishwasher we have discussed here before. Four small spray arms under the lower rack, one in the middle and one on top. The only difference is the Constructa has a window, the Siemens not.

Thank you! What memories that brings back! Once upon a time,  Constructa was pretty damn fine stuff - always better built than necessary.

Of course, back then, everything was better built.

I was the only person I knew in Munich with a clothes dryer before 1983. The only one. To the very end, my friends and relations thought I was a horrible sinner against the environment.

The Rondomatic was a big machine for European standards. Quite expensive too. Whenn I moved to Groningen in the early eighties to go to university here I came across one of those in a window in an old fashioned appliances shop. What a machine, still after 15 or so years, it still looked wonderful. If I had had the space back then...

I used to make a joke about caring for the environment when people complained about my dryer usage. In Dutch the word environment is "milieu" but that word also means background/upbringing/family. I'd use to say "Milieu, milieu? Ik kom uit een voortreffelijk milieu" after a commercial. (Environment, environment? I come from a very good background).

Here's a video from a machine from the catalogue. On page 5 in the first message you can see the AEG Turna L. It's similar to the AEG Turnamat, but without the spinner. These machines were often bought by people who didn't have the space for a Turnamat. They would use a separate spin dryer with this washer. I love the rapid advance timer.
