1967 Maytag Washer

but is it just me or is that a helical drive tub and agitator and could they have hooked that to an orbital drive train or did they swap everything out?

New Style Agitator In A 1967 Maytag

As mentioned earlier this washer probably had a new orbital transmission installed as part of a major repair, although it is entirly possable that someone just replaced the agitator and put the wrong one in.

 

However if this washer was in continuous use since 1967 [ even light use ] it is highly likely that either the lower oil seal in the transmission failed or the top transmission agitator output shaft got water in its bearings and sized, the orignal two piece agitators in these washers allowed much more water to get to the top transmission bearings and much sooner failures occurred.  So if a good repair company had been called on this washer in the 10-20 years with one of these problems and the customer really wanted it fixed this would be the likely repair, the orbital trans and agitator kit that MT sold when they stopped selling the old style trans.

Yes, it looks as though the original long-stroke transmission and agitator were replaced with an orbital re-build kit.

The kits were available from Maytag to re-fit any Maytag washer, large or standard capacity with the new transmission and smaller finned agitator which compensated for the shorter, faster stroke. Of course, all the seals, bearings, etc. were replaced at the same time.

I had an appliance repair guy at my house many years ago to check out an old WP washer and he spotted my '63 Maytag turquoise A700 and told me he could "update" it with a new transmission and agitator anytime and keep "that old girl" running for many years to come. I'd seen the orbital drive in the new Maytag washers at the time and told him I'd let him know...

Oh Greg

You should have let him ( Up Grade ) your A700.  Truth is the orbital transmissions WILL NOT fit pre 06 MTs, the lower transmission shaft and tube on pre 06 MTs is longer on these older helical drive washers.

 

Orbital transmissions will not fit AMPs either, LOL.

Actually, the orbital will fit the older machines. There were two orbital kits. One for "Large capacity"machines (19 gallon) and another for "standard capacity" machines (16 gallon).

Hi Mark, The standard capacity 06 and later and standard capacity orbital transmissions WILL NOT fit the pre 06 MTs, the transmission is about one inch shorter on the these later designs, We tried it have you actually tried this?

That said, I have 3 16 gallon orbital machines in my basement that are NOT in use at the moment….

Not Orbital, but

When we found my 1961 baby* Maytag with timed fill and three wash water temperature buttons, it needed a new transmission. Jeff and I tried just putting a transmission from an 06 series standard capacity washer in it. It went together fine, but when it did the helical reverse thing for spin, it locked down against the baseplate assembly. We had to take the washer all apart and use the lower part of the original transmission and pair it with the top part of the 06 transmission to have the proper length shaft below with the smooth functioning top part with the gears.

Later the motor went out so we replaced it with a two speed motor controlled by a toggle switch on the back of the control panel so it provides great laundering flexibility. It has the old blue tub with the large non-perforated zone near the bottom of the tub wall. With the black Power Fin agitator and the 50 cycle pulley kit, it probably has the most energetic action of any old Maytag I have seen, but the old transmissions are taller than the 06 short tub transmissions.

I consider you and Ben and a few others on this site to be the authority on these MTs, you guys have spent a lot of time researching and cataloging MT literature, but when I nicely point out that something will not fit or work I do not expect to be called names.

 

You have all the MT parts lists and data on hand, all you would have had to do is look for the Pt # [ 2-739 ] for the lower transmission case for a A700 and compare it to the LTC # of [ 2-3162 ] for say a A206 to see that this part was changed.

 

I figured that you and others already knew that an 06 and later standard capacity [ 16 gallon tub ] transmission would not fit the pre 06 helical drive washers.

I honestly didn't realize that there was a 1/4" difference between the pre-1966 Maytag 16 gallon washers and the post 1966 design. It's not well documented in the literature and my service experience in the regard is absolutely O.
