Always love reading your memories associated with machines. This one did fire up just fine. Spin is smooth so no bearing issues I know of. Agitation seemed good. I’ll jump in and give it a good cleaning and make sure there aren’t any problem areas inside. Just need to find a suds saver valve at some point. I saw some online a couple of years ago. Should be a fun machine!

Bearing sound really good. Tub break needs replacing though. Pretty much free wheels to a stop.

How strong is the agitation on this washer?

Quite brisk

14 minutes of regular agitation typically seems like too much in my opinion especially being a smaller capacity outfitted with a surgilator.

Glad you’ve got it running. I used a 1971 standard capacity model for 15 years and rarely set it to 14 minutes(usually 10) of agitation and it always got everything clean. Also rarely set the water level below large. The ‘71 Imperial 80 had an infinite switch with a small and extra small setting. Setting the machine for extra small with high agitation guaranteed you a water show. Enjoy yours!

Tub break in pre-fast break whirlpool belt drive machines

Whirlpool didn’t beef up the tub brake until 1971 on their belt drive machines before that they came to a rather leisurely stop.

You You can upgrade the braking by installing a 1971 or newer clutch and brake assembly you also have to change the spin cam bar in the rivet in the wigwag plunger to the heavier duty parts.

The slow breaking will not hurt anything.

Thanks! Seems like a good machine. No need for bearings which is great news and seems to be free of leaks. The tub is definitely quite loose but I believe I could make an adjustment that should help correct that. The ‘64 Kenmore definitely didn’t free-wheel like this machine does. The agitation is nice and smooth without any knocking. I still can’t figure out how to get the knocking to stop in the ‘64. I’ve tried adjusting the transmission bolt but it still does it.

I love how a little bit of water shoots out of the filter at seconds 38-40 on the spin.

VERY COOL...

This is a cool looking washer. I've always liked the look of these WHIRLPOOL washer with the control box in the corner. They seem like they're pretty easy to use. And the colors of the control panel & box are so pretty looking. Does the timer cycle light up?

Lighted dial would have been a cool feature and I’m sure they reserved that for Kenmores and higher model Whirlpools. Part of what attracted me to this machine was just how similar it is to the ‘64 Kenmore 70 I picked up a couple of years ago. You can definitely see where Sears got the more cosmetically appealing designs to the cabinet and panel to an otherwise identical machine.

Also, noticed how the Bakelite surgilator is not as aggressive as the later white plastic version which has extended fins beyond the base as well as three additional smaller ins in between. Those suckers are really aggressive!

It sure does look like the dial could light yup on the WHIRLPOOL. And yes, that KENMORE looks great. But to me, I prefer the WHIRLPOOL
