Hi The Philco was a very rare machine, i was wondering if anyone had a picture of the 1970's version of the square door Bendix? My godmother had one i used to watch, and this was replaced by the washcraft zanussi in 1985. The memories i have of this machine are a bit vaige, but rememeber the front panal all silver looked a lot like the square door Bendix and the same drum.

Model W40A

Hi Richard.

Below is a link to really wet your appetite for these classy looking machines.

As you mention, rather rare in this country and with wonderfully smart styling.
The vid shows a preserved example in a collection that will make your jaw drop.

My aunt had a Philco front loader, which I remember very well - it had a rear control panel, a detergent dispenser on the top and a round door which locked with a key - possibly from the 1960's but I have no idea. I do remember that she lived in a prefab and the kitchen used to vibrate a bit when it started spinning!

and the 2nd generation W45 from 1981.

Hope the above help and have a gander at Candybimatic's other vids on youtube - his machines are stunning.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks so much for uploading this Paul!!!
There is something i like about the chrome door and the handle that i just love!!
Is the programming just like the square door bendix?
I remember the spin sounding slightly like an accelerating milk float, if only i could see one of these asgain in action it would just be amazing!
I also love the attachment of the zanussi washcraft you sent me. My godmother replaced this machine in 1985, with only a 500rpm. She always said both where excellent machines just the the 500 spin obviously wasnt as good spin. Always so quiet though.
When i opened the attachment i was listening to a radio station that was playing all songs from 1985 and was so fitting as they where the songs i was listening to at the time of my first watch at that time with the zanussi-what wonderfull memories!!
Thanks Paul

Chrome Doors :)

no worries Richard.

I remember one of these machines - it lived in the next row of houses to my grandma. I only remember seeing it once and I was about 6 years old at the time, but took special note of it. Took me a back a bit - Bendix, but not Bendix!

Dont know anything about the programming, but would assume that they were identically propgrammed to the 7142 for the 500rpm machines and 7147 for any 800rpm versions.

Like you, I too would love to see one again in the flesh. Am just grateful that there are a handful in preservation, albeit so very far away.

Hi Paul.

Can you roughly date your aunts Philco. If it was 60s then it will probably have been a Philco-Ford machine, of which one lived directly across the road from the same grandma, who I mention above. The machine I remember was essestially a Bendix LT and, as with the other Philcos, an example of the very same model is owned by Candybimatic and appears in the link below.

A HUGE machine with traditional PHILCO name, sat alongside the oval 'ford' car badge! Very weird seeing a car manufacturers name on a washing machine.

Below is the Philco autobiomatic, which I think was a very early 70s model...

Painful memory.........

Hey Guys
When I was on my YTS after leaving school(22 years ago now!!!) the classics we were dumping at the time make me want tocry if I think too much :(.

There are 2 which make me curse the most....
1. 1848 Liberator in mint condition- I can still visualise it stood in the scrap pile now........
2. Early 70s Philco-Ford W??. - It had the removable detergent port in the door and still had the warning sticker to keep hands out until cylinder stops...

Not to mention reconditioning pink 652 Hoover cleaners and throwing away Vinyl bags etc..........

My Granny had a Philco washing machine and my uncle had the matching dryer. The Washing machine pulse span, although I don't know if it was just the machine was broken or not! It got replaced by an Electrolux machine in 1988. Last saw the dryer in 2000, might still be around but my uncle died and he lived down in Mansfield so we couldn't go down at short notice to help clear the stuff.

Both great machines!

That's the one!!

Hi Paul - I am 99% certain that the picture you have posted is the machine I remember. It definitely had the lower profile rear control panel as in the picture, unlike the Philco Ford in the Youtube clip. I am also positive that it was a Philco, plain and simple. I guess it was a forerunner of the Bendix LAundry Centre, which looked very similar.

I never got a really good look at the top very often because my uncle had made some kind of shelf arrangement that sat on top of the machine when not in use, which was always PILED with clutter, as was the whole prefab so getting a look at it was not always easy.

Im pretty sure my godmother had the W45, and on the draw the programme guide was in multicoloured font, however i rememeber a few years ago i asked her about the machine, she said you put the powder at the top, though i remember the controls where definately on the front.

David, is pulse spin when it whizz up to 500 rpm for 2 seconds and then kills the spin and the foam goes all over the window and then sits and pumps and tumbles and turns and thinks, (though im sure in those days there was no fuzzyness, so less of the thinking) and then does it again, am i right in thinking this?

Im going to try and phone my godmother i have not seen in 5 years and go round for a cupper and see if she has any pictures of her old kitchen with the Philco in it, she knows im slightly mad!

Just currently amused at the idea of seeing a Ford badge on a washing machine!

Philco bendix

All these Philcos were made here in Italy in the Brembate factory. My aunt bought a Philco Bendix in 1963. It also had the rear controls console, the detergent door was on the enamelled top and the large porthole with the key. It had a large knob for programme choice and two other rotary selectors, one for adjusting the temperature of prewash and wash and the other to select delicate cycles. It was also made in Italy

Rich, I think thats probably how it done it, however I always think it went from a standing start straight into spin. It done a fair few spins anyway. It could have been a problem but I don't know. My gran likes things to match and she bought the electrolux machine with the matching dishwasher so the machine could have been fine. Almost broke my heart 10 years later when she replaced the two machines with hotpoints!
