1972 GE refrigerator

In 1972, my Mother bought a TOL GE avocado green top freezer/refrigerator. After a complete kitchen rebuild in 1997, the GE was moved to the basement. I was sure that it would not survive the move. It did, and is still going strong. The amazing thing is....the refrigerator HAS NEVER BEEN SERVICED OR REPAIRED. Anyone have any similar stories of longevity?

So how did the GE's replacement fare in the "repair" department? What was the replacement?

GE replacement

The replacement for the GE was a JennAir side by side. It has already had three service calls, all out of warranty. The defroster element has been replaced. The icemaker "full bin" switch broke and the water valve broke and flooded the kitchen floor. Luckily I was home, and heard it and was able to shut off the water before any damage was done to the hardwood floor in the new kitchen....(the house is mine now, and so is the GE in the basement)

Pitch the Jenn-Air and bring the GE back up.

Those GE's and other brands of that era and earlier are just the ones the "Energy Police" want you to turn in even if they work because they're not "efficient". Well, I'm paying the bill, dammit, and if I want to spend for the "energy hog" so be it.

I have been very tempted to have the GE painted white and bring it back to the kitchen...or maybe leave it green....and I agree with you...I am the one paying the bill...

Have it painted

Have a good body shop paint old greeny white for you. It is not expensive.

I'm afraid to move it that far. But am giving serious thought to bringing it back to kitchen in its original green state. Would be a conversation starter, and besides, most who know me think I am "daft" anyway when it comes to appliances...but you guys know better...

Or better yet, why not "pimp it out"...get the body shop to paint it silver or sparkling dark blue--colors you'd most likely see on cars!

Painting appliances was big in the eighties. There were, and perhaps still are companies that will come to your home to paint them. It is called electrostatic painting. I just know there is someone here familiar with the process and can fill us all in.

Don't mess with perfection

Why paint it white...if it was meant to be white that would have been the color your mom bought in 1972 and besides I think avacodo is much more interesting than white PAT COFFEY

.....I don't think that the "Green Monster", as my sister calls it, will ever be painted white now that I have had "chat" with you guys. I will leave it in the basement,as a standby replacement for the next time the JennAir junk has a problem. Too bad I didn't keep the Sears 900 washer and dryer, too.....also avocado, and in excellent condition when I gave them away. Fortunately, they were taken by someone who needed them, and are also still in use. (and no, i'm not going to ask for them back, even though i would like to)

Wel, of course, don't ask for them back BUT, offer to take them back if they ever break down and they get new ones, or decide to get new ones on the "age" princpal, or they move away.

Funny thing, I have a 1972/1973 ge refrigerator in harvest gold, which was my grandmother's and has not had one repair!
Ge really use'd to make'em to last!

Our 1972 Frigidaires

My grandma and I each have Frigidaire Cycla-Matics both originally bought in 1972. Grandma's is harvest gold, with a white interior. Mine is white with a turquoise interior. Grandma's sits proudly in her kitchen. Mine is in the basement for pop, beer, and overflow from the kitchen fridge. I bought mine from an estate sale, and I have all the original literature. Neither has had to be serviced since the day they were new.

Beautiful part of the country,PolkaNut. The company I work for used to send me up that way to deliver to Wausau Metals. Used to stay overnite at the Rib Mountain Inn.

And of course I had to stop on the way home,and pick up a few "pointers" at the brewery.........
