It's kinda interesting that the original, technical term is control magnet assembly, but wig wag became common and acceptable to the point that it's the description on the FSP package.

Is it me or are the older Whirlpool control magnet assembly aka wig wag more robust compared the the control magnet assemblies they used after 1965? The control magnet assembly on my Whirlpool has much larger plungers where it goes into the solenoid along with fairly heavy duty solenoids since the copper seems to be much thinker.

I Remember

Seeing this set on the floor of the catalog store in my small home town. Why is it that I remember this washer having a roto-swirl agitator?

This console/model design with varying aesthetics appears in catalogs from 1972 to 1975.  Sears marketing dept worked overtime on special promotion and sales models with varying feature sets so there could have been one with a Roto-Swirl.

Hi everyone,

These are indeed 1973 models that debuted sometime in ‘72. The dryer in fact has a 1972 only door handle.

I don’t remember for certain, but I think the washer was available with and without a bleach dispenser. The 1973 model debuted for the last year of the old numbering system where the model year was the first two digits after the 110. (Sears source code for WP).

Dave is right that these models seemed to be everywhere in the 70s, and there was at least 6 other different plastic panel models from 1972 to 1975 with the hump over the timer. It would seem this was the most common.

There was also a distinct 1975 model that looked almost identical. It was available only with dispensers, and differed from the ‘73 by having a Roto Swirl agitator, and the amusing kicker, the wood grain pattern, which is clearly a vertical grain on the 73s is horizontal on the 75s.

I don’t think the dryers differed at all other than the fake wood, but the 75 washer may have had an OB relay, but the 73 did not.

This looks like a great set.

So…

I still blame John and Jason for this little Kenmore bug I caught a handful of years ago. Fancy models are great of course but I kinda like these workhorse models, too. I remember reading and watching videos of a member’s refurbishing of the “green beast” Kenmore 60 and I loved that. These are a “green beast” pair and happy to have them. I’ll be checking out the washer issues in the coming days. If it’s really just a bad wig-wag then that’s an easy fix. They are my favorite color!

First test

Wigwag is working fine. She needs new spin tube bearings. Smooth agitation though. I’m thinking the tub brake might be a little too snug causing too much drag on the spin startup. If anyone has a whirlpool belt-drive bearing tool I could use I would very much appreciate it!

It's a model that's mid-line and lacks a fabric softener dispenser and is even standard capacity, but the manual-clean filter if it had would be on that right front part of the tub sticking out like a sore thumb...
