Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Not in bad shape for being down here!!! :)

Ironically enough, I spoke with a few appliance dealers in San Antonio back in November and one actually remembered the "Jet-Action Machines"...said there were a few on a truckload of appliances but left them there.

control panel

I wonder if that control panel was a victim of aerosol spray n wash. It would remove stains and strip paint.

Update

Both machines sound very promising, were well taken care of, and have had recent work on them by a jet engine mechanic (basically someone who knows what they're doing!), which is great. Here's what the owner said:

"Hi.. no there’s no rust on the inside… both work.. the washer leaks if it has too much clothes I think it starts at the spin cycle.. I was trying to fix them believe it or not.. the machine has a set of new bellows (inner and outer).. no more than 6 months old.. I just decided it was time for me to get some new ones. These machines are as old as I am and are hand me downs from my mom and dad… they has soft water running thru them for about 20 years incase that helps. Again.. no rust on the inside of either… the washer has a fairly new lint trap less than 5 years old purchased by my father. I know the timers have been replaced. I don’t know if it’s been on both or just one. All the work has been done by my dad who’s a jet engine mechanic.. so quality of the work should be acceptable."

Does anyone think the pump is causing the leak? Also, what kind of belt does the 1-18 use...probably wouldn't be a bad idea to replace that as well...

Wow, those are gorgeous! The control panels may need TLC, but on the inside, they're pristine where it counts. I wish someone had run soft water through MY 1-18 for the last thirty years!

I still haven't braved a lot of mechanical operations with my 1-18, Austin, so this is a "for what its worth and then disregard it," but one of the things that made my 1-18 leak a tiny bit at spin was the fact that the top cover over the tub (a plastic, circular bit that's held to to the top of the outer tub with metal spring-clips) had gotten ever-so-slightly bonked in transport, and thus water could make it up over the top if you had a big load and things were flung that way.

Reseating it and re-clipping the clips fixed it. That may be too dumb to mention, but since the source of all my 1-18's leaks WERE from causes too dumb to mention, I thought I'd throw it in there, for what it's worth.

:-D Good luck with that. That's a beautiful washer, and if my experience is any indication, it'll become your favorite (and it holds TONS!).

I'd love to have a 1-18, but I haven't even yet had time to get anything done with the WO-65. Ugh.

Austin, you need to get these so they're in the Texas family!

Hey Glenn,

I've got the box of Frigidaire parts in my closet waiting...just let us know when you're ready to tackle the Unimatic again--that much closer to the maiden load!! Just wondering, have you acquired any other parts or gotten those damn pump cover screws off yet?

As for the 1-18 set, you bet I'm getting them!! The tub guard does look a little off, yet the tub appears normal, so I think reseating it might do the trick (and I have the repair manual). Only close observation will tell where the leak is coming from. The dryer most likely will need to be thoroughly cleaned, and possibly a new belt. And then I also have the '68 Kenmore to mess with...but at the rate I'm going I'll be ready for a wash-in in no time!

They're mine!! WOOHOO!!!

Agreed on a deal and will be picking them up soon, hopefully this Sunday. Glad I have the necessary repair literature!

San Antonio is only a 3-hour drive from here so I don't have to go too terribly far...not as far as with the Westinghouse "Dual-Tumble"...

Oh Austin!

WOOHOO for you!

I could just punish myself for selling the one I had in 1983. She was so beautiful. Flour. lights and all. I did call the person I sold it to long ago, but she had left it in a house that she had moved from.

Have a great time! Let us know how they work.

Steve

Way to Go Austin!

Congratulations. I'm still searching for any frigidaire but it looks like Indiana is more Whirlpool/Kenmore country than anything. Although I'm still a newbie and haven't really dug deeper yet.

Keep us posted.

Congratulations Austin!!!!

Hey! Great finds! This is the same washer that I found about 4 months ago only in coppertone. It is model WC. I am still working on mine, however, it has a small pump leak and needs a paint job on the front access panel. So far I have run a couple of loads through it and mechanically it is working fine.

You were very lucky to find the matching dryer. The dryer was not with my washer.

Can't wait to read your future posts after you get them home.

Dennis

That much closer to Jet-Action...

Scheduled a pickup date: 1:30 PM Sunday...absolutely cannot wait!!!

My first GM "TRUE" Frigidaire washer and dryer...YAY!

control panel restoration

I suspect you're going to have to replace those control panels, the black could probably be re-done, but the wood grain and blue control markings would be a real challenge. But I bet one of us has those panels out there somewhere.

differences

I notice the washer is labeled "Heavy Duty" but the dryer isn't. Does this mean it's "Light Duty?" :-)

Congratulations!

Great find!

Hi Rocky2...
Interesting you mention Indiana's brand preferences..

I would be curious to see a list of what states or regions tent to buy/have what brands. Anybody really know?

I have seen one Frigidaire washer way out on the tip of Long Island in the ex-urbs (far suburbs) IMHO Frigidaire is a more a southern thing at least, on the east coast (my spotttings were in NC & SC.) Not too much GE laundry here either except mid-westerners who move to lower NY state.

I'd say the whirl-mores do very well here due to variety, availablity, and varying price-points, as well as many size options. But again (everyone roll your eyes.. LOL) in NY city 24" wide (and smaller) washers do well in apts.

These were the most common sizes for decades:

2 foot wide refirgerators
3 foor wide stoves
4 foor wide double sinks (once requred by law)
9 feet in total

There was a shallow sink for dishes and a deep one for hand-washing of laundry. This is now where everyone hangs the washer drain-hose. (Handles the huge volume of water very well)

So the small 2 foot wide refs. were moved and the 2 foot wide washer would sit in its place, and coincidentally these tended to be right next to the sinks.

so now a 9 foot wide row of appliances gets replaced by

2.5 foot (30 inch) stove
2.5 foot space for fridge
2.0 foot sink
2.0 foot dishwasher (your std. 24")

same 9 feet!

..there I go rambling again.

Be good... everyone.

Am I going to be busy....

Rearranged a lot of stuff today; moved the '68 Kenmore down to the shed and the GE Portable up here (since it's a "sink washer")...long way to go though. The 1-18s are in good shape and for the most part just need a major cleaning...will post "pre-lim" pictures soon. They also came with the original manuals, which really surprised me!! However I have realized that I am now out of room, which means no more acquisitions from either one of us!! :(

I'm probably going to wait until the shed is entirely finished before continuing any work on the major projects; actually they're all major in some sort, LOL, but I seriously need to get the currently mechanically sound machines hooked up and out of the way before tackling the machines that need some TLC as I am out of main floor space at this moment!! Last will come cosmetic repairs, and then after that I will have a working collection--nothing to do except wash and relax! I expect that I will finish completely in 1-1.5 years at the most...I'm not rushing it but I will probably get done sooner...who knows? I also have a design idea for the '82 Kenmore as far as getting the cabinet painted is concerned...

Really looking forward to the Convention to get away from all of this schtuff!! Now it's time to list a few things on eBay, which is another thing I keep putting off...

Hey Austin-

Good Show, man. This proves that Frigidaires actually exist in Texas (Well Glenn's was first). I'm still out on Louisiana (actually I saw some years ago). Still holding out for hope.

Toggleswitch-curious to know about washers in other parts of the country? Down in La is what I can state about

1. Kenmore
2. Whirlpool
3. Maytag/GE tie
4. Evenly divided between Frigidaire, kelvinator, Speed Queen, Westinghouse, Norge, etc.

More than likely southern Arkansas and Eastern Texas has roughly the same washer demographics. Venture to say Kenmore may be as high as 90% around this part of the country. This is very unscientific, only what I have observed over the years. And what I see in the junkyards and used appliance shops.

There's a BOL 1970s JetAction (not 1-18) Frigidaire living a block from my grandmother's house, still in use. It belongs to the neighbor who gave her the infamous Kelvy in the early 70s. Quite possible the Frigidaire was the Kelvy's replacement.
