1978 Hoover Selectamatic 1100 A2054 (A3064)

Hope everyone is having a great summer!

Yesterday, I spent my day off unwrapping another addition to my collection and a special one at that.

Underneath the layers of plastic was something unique!

Ta-dah! It’s in lovely condition and some TLC will see it right for another couple of decades I’m sure.

Ratings sticker, made in Wales alongside the home market models for the export market. If I am correct in deciphering the serial number this appears to be an early machine from February 1978.

Programme dial - similar to that on the A3060.

Lid off revealing a stainless steel tub and the programme barrel that acts like the famous Hoover Keyplate. The door seal which appears to be genuine or even original has completely perished so that will be getting replaced along with the bearings as they sound a little rough. Furthermore, I’m going to try and source a chrome door and black dial cap as it only seems fair on this top of the range model. You may notice the triple inlet valve, this machine is cold fill only but I’m going to fit a hot inlet valve since provision is left to do so.

Finally, two sisters side by side. I do think a chrome door would look nicer. Does anyone have any A2054 specific information or literature? I know there is an A3064 manual online which is the same thing but it would be nice to see some A2054 stuff if it exists.

What a lovely find! And good to see it has company... but why did the Keymatic have a different drum? What purpose did the hole in the centre back of the conventional Hoover drum serve?

Thank you, I can't wait to have them both running side by side with their matching D6042 dryer.

I see what you mean, actually the Keymatic 1100 has its drum removed for servicing. I'm not sure why there is a hole in the back of the Hoover drums. People have guessed over the years but I don't think there is a definite answer to be honest.

Selectamatic

Another great find James, the stainless steel drum is a nice edition like Mathews A3060 which was due to a metal shortage for the vitreous enamel outer drums due to the National Steel Strikes so Hoover started to use the more expensive steel drums to keep production moving !!

What do the R,S & T programmes provide on the timer ?

Well done on getting this one James. A lovely machine. I've had a look at my literature and can't see any reference to the A2054 although there are earlier A20xx series machines listed and it's not in the classic collection book either. I've attached some of the info for the A3064 in case you haven't seen it and unfortunately there isn't one of the colour cards for this model in my gumpf either.

Make sure your earthing is up to scratch or a shock will ensue according to the service bulletin! You can use the order form for the spares lol.

I notice that your keymatic facia has suffered the same issue as my dryer. I'm wondering if a coat of lacquer will help sort it out. I've bought a can to try - I don't think it could look any worse so am willing to risk it. Will let you know how it turns out when I get round to doing it.

Thanks, I never knew about the National Steel Strikes but now that you mention it I remember watching a documentary recently about British Steel and all the stuff going on in the 1970s. I honestly thought it had a stainless steel tub because it was for the export market but that’s just financially impractical. Did other manufacturers import stainless steel or just Hoover?

R, S & T are Fast Spin, Slow Spin and Reset respectively. The only additional programme this appears to have over the A3062 is a Gentle Whites wash for nappies etc. I’ve attached the programme guide for you.

Thanks, I was unsure about it at first but I’m so glad I did take the plunge. Many thanks for uploading those pages! I assume the other A20xx machines were just mirrors of their UK counterparts? I will have to check out my earthing then haha!

Yes the Keymatic fascia is a little worse for wear, this seems to be a common problem with the New Magic range. Lacquer sounds like an idea worth trying!

Hoover Programme Guide

Ah, the days when instruction manuals provided clear and concise information.

When attempting to get info these days, it's like trying to wrestle gold bars from the vault of the Bank of England! Bloody awful.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

(Incidentally, I'm another who has never seen a stainless outer tub on a Hoover - you learn something every day!).

Interesting programming on the Selectro James, must check what Mathews is....ta for the diagram pages. Certainly interesting washer, but still think the "Clicking Keyplates" have it ha ha...

Gentle Whites

Gentle Whites was available on the older machines as 'Whites Special', as far as I recall it was program A3 on the 3236H and half spin C on the A3138 Automatic AS1. I'm guessing that the other models between these and yours must have had it too before going to the 'Whites Economy' on the Electrons. I think this was the only program that at rinse hold you were advised to select full spin and not click back to the short option once the machine started to drain.

Hi Mike,

17 programmes is bound to cover every conceivable wash load in my opinion.

I 100% agree with you in that it “looks” and “feels” more futuristic and fun slotting a Keyplate into a Keymatic than it is going a bit “primitive” and turning a dial on a Selectamatic. The Selectamatic is a strange machine and it would be interesting to find out what Hoovers intentions were when this model was on the drawing board as it offers virtually nothing more than what the A3062 has to offer and the rotary Keyplate doesn’t make it vastly superior? A niche machine for sure but lovely all the same!

Whites Special

Hi Ian,

Whites Special exists on this machine too. Normally, Whites Special is HLCC Programme 9 and is essentially a normal action Whites Programme 1 but without a final spin. Gentle Whites on this machine is a unique programme in that it is a Whites Programme 1 with a final spin but with gentle wash action.

Generally, Whites Economy on later machines is a 70-85°C Programme 1.

Hi James.

Well, it would seem that we both stumbled across this machine at the same time. I found it through a google images search and was like 'whoa' and then I saw where it was and was like 'oh:-('.

I wrote it off for a day, then let Mike know about it and was going to nudge some of the German collectors about it, using youtube. However, when Mike checked for it, it had vanished. Little did I think it would be heading past me, on it's way to Ireland!
Well done on another preservation job! What you going to find next month? lol.
