1983 model 70 kenmore belt drive washer won't agitate

my vintage kenmore washer has been a real trooper over the years. we still use it on a regular
basis and aside from replacing the belt, water pump and wig-wag it has not had any major problems. however, just today, it stopped agitating...there was a knocking noise where it seemed to try to agitate but only partially rotated the agitator...then no more noise or even partial rotation.
the motor runs fine and the machine drains water and spins without a problem, it just doesn't agitate. would the gearbox be failing if it still spins? will being low on transmission fluid cause this symptom (ie. spin but no agitate?). Thanks.

Non Agitating 1983 Kenmore BD Washer

Unfortunately your washer most likley has worn out main spin tube and agitator seals ans as a result has gotten water in the transmission which has caused the agitator gear spring to rust and break. To fix you would need another transmission and new center-post clutch & brake package plus new main bearings and seals. [ yes this washer can still spin just fine with a transmission that is broken in this manor ]

 

This is normally the practical end of this washer unless you want to start doing major repairs, outer tub rust is the other item that normally sends these great washers to the recycler.

Thanks, John, for the quick answer. I figured the transmission was failing. The part # is 362901 from Sears...I think that's the same as the Whirlpool #. Anyway, is there any place you would recommend me getting a used transmission...I've checked on e-Bay but do not seem to have any luck....at least with the 362901 part number.

Also, is it possible for me to rebuild the tranny myself? I don't see any issue taking out the transmission, and cracking it open, but getting a new agitator spring...I'm thinking that would be harder.

I just hate to get rid of this machine. We've had it new when my son was born and it's the only washer we've ever owned. It is so well made and simple to disassemble.

Do you have pics of your washer I'd like to what yours looks like I had the same issue with my 81 Kenny and it had to be scrapped I tried to save it but when it got down to the gear box it was too much work .
