Hey everyone. I have been having issues with my 1986 Kenmore 80 series washing machine. It fills, agitates, and neutral drains, but when it gets to the spin cycle it just hums. If i give it a spin by hand it try’s to spin but stops. Then other times will spin but not as fast as normal then slow and stop while it’s still humming and should be spinning. I just replaced the transmission and clutch. I thought it was the basket drive so I did that today. Still no spinning. I took the case off and saw the clutch spinning so I am not sure what the issue is. Can anyone help?

Poor or no spin in a direct drive washer

Hi, since you replace the Braska Drive, I assume you took the wash basket out and could eliminate anything stuck between the outer tub in the wash basket.

The basket drive should turn easily in the bearings. Be sure they’re fully lubricated. There’s a possibility that the basket drive block could be worn and the basket could be sitting down too low and dragging on the bottom of the plastic outer tub make sure the ears on the basket Drive shaft, engage in the basket, drive block.

If you have the clutch in your hand, you should barely be able to turn the clutch band inside the clutch drum. If you can turn it easily by hand, the clutch is no good.

Let us know what else you find. This should be an easy fix.

Could it be that the spin gear inside the gearcase is stripped? I know you said you put in a new gearcase but maybe it's a defective one. Just a thought, not sure if that would even cause the issues you're having.

Ok gotcha, so the spin gear either works or it doesn't there's no in between. That's what I'm guessing from your comment?

I've really only ever heard of this issue being the clutch. It was on my machine when it was worked on a couple months ago. It had a lethargic ramp-up to spin and it was getting to where it would not complete large loads at full speed. Changed the clutch and all was well. Also changed the transmission to fix the neutral drain issue, so that a new clutch wouldn't wear quite so fast.

OP, did you ever sort out your spinning issue?

I haven’t gotten the spin problem fixed yet. I am going to replace the tub support with the bearing and seal kits installed. Hopefully this is the problem as the inner tub is really tight to spin by hand. It has went to not spinning at all no matter if I help it or not. The agitator will spin but the tub will not while it is in spin cycle. I will update again later this week after I install the tub support.
