2009 Kenmore 80 service issue

I went out on a "call" today to see if I could get a friend's washer working again. She has a 2009 Kenmore 80. It won't fill with water. There is no power to either solenoid regardless of where the temp switch is set. The machine spins fine and also dry agitates in the 4 minute window of the "Bulky" cycle where it's supposed to.  That means the motor and (I think) the main timer are fine.  

 

This is one of those machines that has the "auto water level" feature and an exceptionally complicated combination water temperature/water level control. Attached to this are a water temp thermistor AND a water flow sensor.

 

I can rebuild a 1954 Maytag AMP but this SOB completely flummoxed me today!!!

 

Does anyone have any thoughts as to the best way to proceed?  Call Sears Service?

I've heard/read that the water level control is a frequent source of failure on these machines.  There are at least two designs of the control so be sure the correct replacement is used.

It starts agitating immediately?  Does some water spray in at the *end* of the final spin (that's a common symptom).

No it does not start agitating immediately.

 

When I move the timer to the "dry agitate" section of "Bulky" it agitates.  

 

I did this as a diagnostic to see if the motor reversed.

This washer has the first version of the load sense switch. This is a high failure item in these washers. Place timer in rinse cycle to see if it will fill. This bypasses the automatic temperature control and rules that out as the problem. If still no fill, go to extra rinse setting. This bypasses normal fill contacts on timer. If still no fill, unplug pressure hose from load sense switch (fabric softener control) and blow into hose to make sure it's clear. Reconnect hose and try fill again. If no go, then replace the switch. Part number W10292584. About $62 at appliancepartspros or repairclinic. The advantage to these sources is that they are reputable, have a 365 day return policy on any part for any reason and you will likely have your part in a day or two. BTW, the dry agitate function is 2 minutes, not 4. It bypasses timer fill contacts and load sense pressure sensor control.
